Hello to every one. Things are abit slack with work at the minute so i have decided to but my skills to good use, and make up some traveling boxes.
They are all finshed in gloss black on the outside and 3 coats of varnish on the inside. It comes fitted with a rope handel and latch on the door along with a hole at the bottom of the door to allow you to keep the bird secure at all times. You can chose your own perch covering, These are all made to order to suit your birds needs. Any questions just pm me.

There is also 1/2 inch air holes running along the bottom on the sides and back.

Steve, sorry if im appearing a tad paranoid but is it ply or mdf? Cos I made one last year and chose mdf only to find its a huuuuge no no due to dust particles.
I find ply a pain in the backside to keep clean & maybe you'd consider something on the interior to make it dark. This is where Carls boxes come into their own and and only £40 more and able to be hosed out. I think if you want to offer a competitive product using natural materials you need to 'smarten the look up, get some astroturf on that perch and get the inner dark and wipeable. Hope that helps:yawinkle:

Plus all of the box is sprayed on the outside, and 3 COATS OF VARNISH INSISDE. And when the door is closed it is black inside. And like i have already said you choose your own pearch covering, if you want astro you can have it, if you want rope you can have that. the choice is yours!!!!

Carl i did not mean to stand on anyones toes and would be happy to knock up some other box's.

Im afraid its not Steve:rolleyes: theres a lot of threads on here about it and the enclosed bird is at risk as well as the carpenter (who would know anyway to wear protective kit).
Dont take these comments as critisisms, they aren't.. but if no one talked, discussed and helped each other with established facts it wouldnt be much of a forum would it.
Your craftmanship isnt in question here.. its advise to help you actually sell some :yawinkle:

Please can any one tell me why mdf should not be used. Its used in the construction of reptile vivarums with no ill effects, and the animals are kept in them 24/7. Unless your hawk or falcon decide to start sanding or cutting up there box there is no chance of any dust just appearing. I have even just searched google for the answer, and everything i read says its fine its only when cutting or sanding the materal that corses the dust to become airborn.

Steve that is my understanding as well, we use a small amount of MDF in some of the vehicle conversions that we do along with **** load of plywood.

We ensure PPE is provide and used by our staff at all times whilst working with these materials.

Cheers for that Carl. So i hope thats that cleared up. I would not not cut any sheet materals without the right ppe being worn. But when finshed its harmless.

Well I was badly advised then when I posted the box I made :( Also the thread recently about it being dangerous to use.. Will dig out previous warning threads when im back at my pc. Several members clearly stated it was a big risk.

"Urea formaldehyde is always being slowly released from the surface of MDF".

Thank you for that Kat i have read your thread. But would like to point out your box was not sealed with anything and was left bear MDF, this should still not release any formaldehyde, But sealing all of the exposed MDF with paint or varnish would make this impossible. But thank you for your input.

after reading various posts on here about home made travelling boxes i set my granddad on the task of making me one: here are the results
Its black plastic of 6mm thickness with a wooden un treated perch. It has brass fixings and a reinforced door. the air holes are at the back with a seperate plastic piece covering them allowing a gap so no light only air gets through. It has plugged drainage holes in the bottom for cleaning and a recessed(sp.?) bottom.

I am so proud of it:D though i do believe it cost quite a wack in materials so wouldnt be cost effective making and selling on a small scale. It is double the thickness of the ones you buy to add strength though is still really light

quarter inch ply , glued and nailed , costs little , have given a couple away over the years.
a well made ply box is light and stable , easy to clean .
just my feeling of those black plastic boxes look like an oven for the bird!!!

was a great thread a while back about home made transport boxes (giant hoods) , guy in America had converted a round drum kinda thing , was really neat ..............

Their is two reasons why I would not dream of using MDF for making a Hawk box. Firstly the adhesive used to bond the materials together to make MDF in the first place is water soluble and no amount of paint or varnish will stop water penetrating the MDF over time, especially when you consider just how much water is needed to clean a hawk box properly. Secondly is the lack of structural integrity, my own hawk box gets thrown around a bit in my works van (without hawks present) and an MDF one would not last five minutes for that reason. MDF is useless for anything structural Sorry!
