Well done Jiff and good luck.
I am aching for a extra dog to work with the bird, but the missus wont bend to it as we have three already.
Only one i use for working with the bird, the other two just take it easy.
my missus has no idea yet,the dog will eventualy be kenneled out but innitialy be in the house, the wife at the minute is out the first she will know is when she comes in and finds us tormenting her yorki with the new kid on the block.

i love how everyone on this forum does anything they want....with their wifes permission :). I am sure she won't mind a cute little puppy, try getting a couple of ferrets and a 4' lizard like me running around, then its hard to justify it.
ok guy's i whent, i saw, i baught the most frightened puppy i've ever seen,
it came from a farm where alot of dogs were kept, never realy given the attention a puppy needs to give him the confidance to deal with the rest of his life, never mind the jiffsters here now, don't know if many of you read my story of the ferrets, but jiff has a habbit of comming accross these situations,a situation where both parties need each other, he's aproximately 18 weeks old and an absolute gem, a few days of TLC and i'm sure we're on a winner, one big bonnus of finding a friend who needs a friend is that they tend to return the favour two fold, pluss what a good feeling sat typing this while the dog is slowly comming round and exploring his new fammily and surroundings, such a nice story but for one thing he did the biggest **** i've ever seen,on the wifes new rug,but every cloud has a silver lining so as i type the wife is building bridges with our new charge who incidently has been named 'WARREN' and now theres talk of him staying indoors, only time will tell but if thats the case i then have room for another 10"x10" avery, things are on the up............................BANG ON MAN :D :D

please  I hope you all get as much enjoyment from your dogs as I do from mine, but they are not Brittany Spaniels  they have been re-classified as pointers

Because they derive from Pointers ans setters with a dwarfism gene.
ok guy's warren is finding his feet, however when i'm about he's still very wary often ducking behind a chair on my approach, after a bit of coaxing and a few doggy treats i win him round,he is at this minute tramping about the place and i have a feeling he's going to leave a pile of mess, however he uses trainer mats which is a bonnus concidering he's probably never seen one before,he plays with the yorki's toy's but again if you approach to interact he backs off,he obviously has had a hard time of it so far but i'm looking forward to the future he's very inteligent that stands out a mile it's a case of building confidance at the minute, once we're best mates training can begin,
as far as the history of the breed goes,as far as i know so far, in the mid 1800's the lords and gentry used to visit france for the shooting, taking along theire dogs which were mainly setters and pointers,on returning to the uk the dogs were left behind because of quarantine restrictions, the dogs were crossed with the local spaniel population, these mateings produced hybrids of all colours (the original brittany) it was noted the cross bred dogs had a better scenting ability and a better working style, in the 1900's small english setters were dilliberately mated to the brittany's,which is why there were taller setterised styles of the breed, the breed stabalised arround 1930's and breeders worked on the smaller cob type dog, the first short tailed brittany standared was established arround 1907-1908. the brittany today is the most popular gun dog of france. it's classified as hunt, point and retrieve breed, but i can find no refferance to it not being a spaniel, so brittany spaniel it is for me.

The ones I've seen have been sh*t hot on rabbits / ground game but haven't been as good when run in company with taller legged dogs of any breed when used on gamebirds - air scenting only. Maybe if run by themselves you wouldn't notice.

H.M.
my pup resembles a cocker in the head with a hint of pointer in the hind quaters,is this the normal appearnce of a brittany,as i aint seen one before apart from pictures.

To be honest Jiff I did not like the look of the Brits until I really started looking and I personally think there are two distinct heads, but they are growing on me in such a way not I think they look better?
Here are some piccies:
http://www.falconryforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=2623
cheers H.M. he's still young at the moment and i've no idea what he'll look like as he matures,he's black and white, infact the same colour as the last pic,but without trying to sound off, i know dogs and i can see the potencial in this dog,but it's bringing it out after he's had such a bad start in life, but i'm in no hurry i'll keep you up dated of our progress,i have hit one snag already as he's become the point of interest with the wife and daughters, with him cowering when we first got him he sparked an overload of mothering hormone flow from the lot,now i'm in danger of loosing control of the situation it can only do him good at the moment as he learns to interact and feel safe but at what point do i step in and start training.

now mate now before the missus claims him........... :D
easier said than done,he's aprox 18 weeks old but has never been socialised with humans so it's as if i'm starting from 8 weeks, mind you at this moment i've a house full of relatives with theire kids running wild and he's coping better than me.

3 of the 4 happy hunters
i've read various articles about the importance of rangle to B.O.P just recently my new brittany pup has started to eat the gravel from the back garden, not a great deal but we've caught him a few times now, playing with peices and before you can stop him down it goes,it's fairly small gravel so i'm confidant that the bits will be past naturaly, has anyone else whitnessed the same behaviour from any of theire pups,i've had dogs a lot of years and never whitnessed it before, having said that i aint had a graveled garden before neither, there could be a trace ellement deficiency in his diet or is it just because his a pup and thinks all things are food.
Goldie
28-04-2005, 09:51 PM
Jiff, pups will be pups. I have bred many many dogs over the years
80+greyhounds 34 siberian huskies and now munsterlanders and many of them have done it. Red chips are a favourite  I dont believe it is a deficiency as not all pups in the same litter do it and they are all on the same diet. they seem to pass them without a great problem
yeh suppose you're right there,it was just currious to me,never having seen it before, another small point that someone may be able to help with,
warren is continulay scratching and itching his-self,i've had him to the vet who gave him a clean bill of health he has no visitors living on him, he has a good diet and conditioning regime,i'm thinking that as his lived outside(in a barn) and now is indoors with central heating ect, this may be the cause, i'm not perticularly worried about it as i've examined him regularly and he seams fine, could be his blood temperature is high but the vet dissmissed this, any info or advice would be appreciated,my dogs generaly have always been outside and i've never noticed this behaviour in any of em.
Goldie
28-04-2005, 11:16 PM
This may be better answered by one of our vets.
However, how well did your vet examine the pup? reason I ask is, the last litter of Huskies I had were doing a bit of itching as well and as I know my way around dogs I checked all the obvious. So I took one to the vet and explained the situation, on CLOSE inspection he told me it was
??????? commonly known as walking dandruff. One of the vets on the forum will enlighten us but its just a possibility.
cheers goldie i'll see if we can get a responce.
