Some advise please.

When would you look to train a harris hawk with ferrets in its first year or start on second year? or does it not matter?

Many thanks:D

when would you like youre bird to catch a rabbit 1st or 2nd year! get the ferets going! incorporate the bird, fly from the fist innitialy untill the bird realises that the ferret is a team member and not food! this doesnt take long 4-6 slips at ferreted rabbits should do it!:yawinkle:

introduce ferrets asap, my very first harris was bomb proof with then because all her early slips were over the ferrets i could happily leave her perched on the ferret box when there was a need to dig for a blocker if a bunny popped out during digging bargain i had a flight out of it or if the ferret popped out she would take no notice

heres an old pic on a very old moblie phone.

however not flying my fourth season female harris over ferrets from the onset has been different i frequently bolt rabbit for her but only from the fist as i never ferreted under her in her first two seasons i don't fully trust her only friday just gone did she nail one of my young jill's a rabbit bolted and she gave chase missed and assumed her position on an adjacent dune next thing shes heading to my left and just made contact with the ferret before i could get there i managed to get both apart with no harm done to the jill, now i'm not saying shell come as when the ferrets are being carried around in the hand around the holes prior to being put to ground shes fine and doesn't bate towards them,,.... but i wish i had ferreted under her from the onset

introduce them as soon as mate

Yep as everyone agrees sooner the better. I bow my birds out next to a run with the ferrets so they get used to them. Works for me so will keep doing it.

my ferrets are about 15ft away from my bird and he can see them all the time, when i first got him he would bait at them but doesnt bother at all anymore

i didnt introduce ferrets to my harris till her second season. didnt take long for her to stop bateing at the ferret. about 3 outings. but each hawk is different. worth the weight in gold
