Neil Forbes said
'Transport or carrying boxes can form a particular risk to new birds. Typically such boxes were made of wood and for want of space, (bearing in mind they tend to be used infrequently), they are commonly stored in damp garages or sheds. On the occasions they are used, they are placed in a warm house or car. Under these conditions, the rich layer of spores which have been growing on the inside of the box dry out, and with the presence of the bird in the box are stirred up nicely ready for the bird to inhale a fatal dose. Travelling boxes should preferably be made of plastic or metal, they should be kept clean and dry, and cleaned and disinfected prior to use.'
in an article about Aspergillosis in Raptors

Are wooden boxes really this dnagerous?

Sean,
Use your common sense with the storage of the wooden box, I'm sure you'll know if it damp or not.

I now use a plastic one, easier to clean / disinfect and you can leave it outside and it won't rot etc.

cleared out the old poly tunnel a couple of weeks back and lit a bonfire out the back near the barns to burn the old rubbish on, ie old potting table etc.
mentioned to Carol a few days before i fancied getting rid of the two carry boxes i had made from ply, planed, varnished, brass hinges the lot etc in the summer and getting a couple of these new lightweight ones, poss from the fair. Anyhow i lit the fire and after a while the guy who sets all the bird scarers in the feilds that ajoin our house turned up so i wondered over to talk to him whilst Carol merrilly stocked the fire. After ten mins he said dont look now chris but your wellies are going on the fire!!!?? i turned and saw Carol throwing my old steel toed work bobs on the fire on top of BOTH GODDAM BOXS

I quickly said my goodbyes and ambled/ legged it over but they were both happily on fire, STILL with he astro perches in STILL with the brass hinges etc on.........AAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHH :x

"well she said" after my polite enquiries as to why they were on the fire "you did say they were going" after several eventfull minutes of trying to explain i was "thinking" about it she still remains convinced i told her i was getting rid of them asap and had not told her otherwise.

Sold Faith om Friday and had totake the poor girl upto the guy in a large cardboard box.......how undignified

women...You gotta love em guys are they will drive you mad    :goodman:

oops sorry Sean

Horses for courses on the birds tho. Depends on your land, quarry, flyingstyle etc etc . For a first bird tho i would say the male is better primarely because they are a more versatile, agile bird. :D just my opinion

an american falconer mailed me a pattern to make a box out of correx, they are used over there a lot,

by all accounts they are very light and also easy to clean.
i'll mail it to you if you want?

She's doing fine mate. She was bowed out with the other HH with hundreds of people wandering about, she never flinched.

FANTASTIC. thanks for that. Got a feeling she will turn out to be a better bird than i was giving her justice to be. When we met the other Mick at heathrow she wasnt fazed in the slightest. Carol has been manning her all week without so much as a bate, considering she has been more or less untouched for over a month.
Got her lad out today to clean out the aviary he was like a wild bird.

Anyway dont want to get into trouble for highjacking the thread again. :D

No correx is thin, it is the stuff the estate agent use in the UK as "For Sale" signs.

Wightwings
18-04-2005, 08:20 PM
yes we use it for site signs on our building sites. I can get plenty of them but wouldnt know were to start bonding the stuff togethor ( i use them as backboards for the birds slices in the housing, totally water proof they are great )

If you don't use it for a while, give a good puff of anti mite spray in and shut it up too. Then if there is any thing like redmite etc it keeps it clear for a good bit.

My best box was a steel frame with bow perch covered in heavy canvas

Left it in aviary and RTs decided to copulate on it and left the top in shreds, still have the frame but never got round to putting new canvas on.

Very light in weight and airy
