thinking about it, aren't EU and US barn owls the same? Don't they just catch wild birds in america?

They are basicly the exact same bird, but we are not allowed to trap barn owls here that I know of. As long as it is a non- native species(ie: European stock) then we can have it.....The reason they are so expensive is that there are only a handful of folks that breed them. Last time I checked on the price, they where going for $400 a piece.
Harris's hawks just went up in price for many breeders to $600 from $400.

the prob being they are not that easy to release, it involves seclusion aviaries, hacking aviaries etc etc .......not that i know anything about barnies you understand
awww barnies are only fuglies when they are babies but they are quite beautful when they are older. i agree they dont have that look that reaches way down into the soul like the Eagle owls, the very beautiful divine look of the SEO or the piercing look of a great grey but they do have that awwwwwwwwwwwww look, go on WW you do have to admit they are a tiny bit lovelyhttp://yelims.free.fr/Groumph/Triste14.gif eh WW just a teeny weeny bit sniff sniff http://yelims.free.fr/Groumph/Triste01.gif (i know what you mean about top heavy but they do say like owl like owner

the problem with releasing them has NOTHING to do with breeding, and little to do with hacking them. Its all about finding the right environment for them, which is disappearing fast. I think i was told they need 100 acres of grassland to keep one breeding pair going. I doubt that someohow as i have seen one going along a river bank. As long as they ave lots of shrews, but its still hard to find a good area.
the prey has to be sufficient too!

of course you have to hack them. but yes the area and food supply are important
