View Full Version : Hawkmaster Bullet Jesses

Here is my own take on the bullet jess.

I have made the bullets folding rather than relying on a welded plastic seating, which also allows for easier insertion through the eyelet and they are machined from a good quality aluminuim.

I used Sampo swivels and 550 Paracord for the main construction with heatshrink to protect areas where birds may get hooked up. They come in a small and a large. Small is around a 5 inch jess and large about 7 inches. Bullet tips can be sharp or rounded you take your pick £10 each paid by Paypal including free UK delivery by recorded first class post.

Overseas buyers please PM or ask and I will quote.

Please excuse the poor quality photos as my camera has gone awol

HI Paul,

Great looking gear, but can you explain the benefit of bullets rather than traditional jess. I'm all for making things easier and adaptations.

HI Paul,

Great looking gear, but can you explain the benefit of bullets rather than traditional jess. I'm all for making things easier and adaptations.

Cheers VS

If I may chip in?

Traditional jesses are difficult and troublesome to remove every time you fly your bird. I assume you are not irresponsible enough to fly a bird with slits in its jesses.

Bullet jesses you take out of the Almeyri anklets in two seconds and the bird is off - everyones happy. :D

HI Paul,

Great looking gear, but can you explain the benefit of bullets rather than traditional jess. I'm all for making things easier and adaptations.

Cheers VSI would personally only use them when out flying. It makes it easier to put on and take the hawk off the fist and have it secured in a group hunting situation, with the added benefit of your hawk flying with less equipment that make tangle.

Tried them out today, excellent, much easier than others i have and better quality. Just one quick question as i am still newish to this, it says on the invoice to use the slightly longer jess in the right eyelet. Is this right as i look at him or his right leg? Sorry if a stupid question but i would rather ask. Also is this just because one leg is slightly further away when on the glove?
Thanks again for them, will be passing the word and back for more!!

Hi there Andy I am glad you find them better thanks!

Yes it is the right leg of the bird you want that one in. You got it in one I have done it to compensate for the extra distance the jess has to travel across the glove to the carry position!

Cheers Paul:supz:

Paul, are you sure? i have the glove on my left hand (as most falconers do) so it is the birds left leg that is furthest away from me. Right leg if the glove on right hand?

Hawkmaster
27-10-2008, 10:54 AM
No the distance the jess has to travel from the eyelet to the swivel needs to be longer from the birds RIGHT leg to the swivel because the left leg it practically above the fingers and therefore can be shorter:lol: (Gloved on a left hand) and visa versa.

Hope that helps?

No thats the main idea of it.As the bird is sat on your glove the furthest leg away from you would have the longest Jess, the difference in length is only about 6 mm.

Hey Paul,

Ordered two sets of these from you recently. Sent you a pm to advise that combining postage would be useful to save having to wait for two packages, especially if they need to be signed for if they get separated in the post. Looking forward to getting them and not having to faff around with swivels and the like!

Hope you've given yourself some time off over Christmas to get into the spirit of things:wink:!!!

Best wishes,

Thanks Paul, got mine in the post on Saturday and we used it as an excuse to go flying - even though everyone else used the wind as an excuse to chicken out:lol:!

Had to adjust my furniture so they would fit as my flying jesses were quite wide, but job done and then they were spot on!

Only observation was that the ring on the swivel was quite small and required a session of hunt the leash in order to find one to fit through from our spares. It is probably an industry standard sized swivel, but as a user of the pointy Ben Long swivel and quite a thick braided leash it was too tight a squeeze. Still, means I now have a field set up and a mews set up so no bad thing.

Pictures to follow, once I can work out the resizing thing, or I may have to mail them to you so you can post!

Sorry Paul, I have kinda slacked on paying attention to the thread, do you have the skinny bullets available yet?

CrossHawk
02-02-2009, 05:26 PM

More pictures on request and please ask questions?:D

Hey Paul I wanted to tell you that I received my sets of bullet jesses, slim profile, and they are top notch! I didn't realized though how small a swivel I ordered and I am not sure if it will be strong enough but as I won't tether the bird with them, only hold him on the glove, there should never be any pressure on that swivel. And your pattern is really simple and neat, I won't have trouble changing the swivel if I need to.
Thanks! :)

Hawkmaster
30-04-2009, 11:52 PM

I would be happy to exchange it for you if you want a bigger swivel?:D

Thanks Paul, but don't worry: I will have much more fun playing with them myself than exchanging them! lol I am totally satisfied!
To be honest, before I bought them I tried to make my own, my father fooled around with stainless steal rods and heavy weight press to make the bullets, but it didn't worked, it was always a tad too big to use with my eyelets. He is gonna try again though, something to do with male pride I think! lol

Johnny you are an idiot sometimes if you have nothing constructive to say then say nothing. It is people like you that start little rumours that then grow into a full blown story that grows with each person it is told to.

Terry didnt mean to be rumour mongering, but if it is Pauls business, why did he suddenly go off the face of the earth without setting something in place, i.e. a mates PC or even a wi-fi laptop somewhere.

Since you have only heard one side to one person's story, why not wait until Paul gets on here to hear his side instead of jumping to conclusions. He could have sent them and they were lost. He could have e-mailed the guy and him not got it. There are many scenarios and like I said, two sides to every story.:yawinkle:

I thought that perhaps they had got lost in the post or my order had not got through. I quite agree that it's surprising how one request for info gets people talking of maybe and perhaps......... I am sure all is fine and the guy is up to his neck with the house move and associated bits, give Paul a chance to get his feet back on the ground and I am sure all will be well. If anyone speaks to him can they pass on my message, please, AND IF I WANT TO LEAVE MY caps lock on I WILL.......:box:

I also bought and paid for some of the jesses at least a month ago now and i havent had anything no contact atall, if he has moved then surely there is some way he can get a message to people who have paid money??
When i last moved we moved our business at the same time, we had our telecoms connected immediately and obviously had to carry on working during the move.
Although i feel i have been very patient i have paid and am getting annoyed and worried about the fact that i have heard nothing just seems a little strange to me??

They not intended for tethering, although I have yet to see a bird remove these ones or report it being done due to the loop. Which helps to answer your last question and means they have strength that others do not.

After drop testing and simply pull testing some I found they broke and made my own version I trust more.:D

Hi Paul seen your bullet jess for the first time last week. Was blown away with the design. They are far Superior to the old style bullet jess i was using. Withe yours you can see if they are wearing out, with the old ones there was no sign one minute good, next second they snap which happened to me. Lucky it was a trained bird and still hungry or that would have been another down the road . I have seen the link for jess with leash do you make just jess for free lofting, if so would like to place order.

Paul Ive just paid for a set of bullets from you, I asked for purple, but if you dont do this colour can I have something bright as Im forever dropping things in the grass. I would also like the brass colour bullet and swivel with black wrap not clear.
For a male harris with medium eyelets so slimline bullets if possible as he wears permanent flying jesses.
