This one's for all of you who have a bit of knowhow on hybrids,
I'm taking a pere/saker , but which sex?
I'll be after corvids in reasonably open country, I've read that a falcon might be too big and intimidate the crows, but I personally have no leanings either way.
This will be my first longwing, and I don't believe that size is everything as I have a nice female harris that flies at 1lb13oz and outflies my mates 2lb 6oz jumbo jet.
Which leads me to.. what about a small falcon or large tiercel and what variations in size can I expect in both sexes? Answers on a postcard please..
Cheers

I would have a tiercel, for the same reasons you have mentioned.

In my opinion pere/sakers are very poutcrossed and will produce a veriety of different sized and shaped birds even in the same clutch.
Perhaps your mates jumbo has thrown more of the saker genes? This is why it is slow!
we use pere into saker for a veriety of reasons, because sakers are cheap and it would be a waste of peregrine to use saker semen when you can use barbary or gyr instead. Another is that the male genes tend to be more dominant. I have flown numerous pere/saker and the ones that were most successful threw the peregrine genes.
There fore when picking your pere saker from the clutch, try and get first choice!!! If you can't you may be wise to wait for the second clutch and get first choice!!
Then when it comes to choosing which bird you can go for the female that is either the smallest or middle sized. Never ever choose the big saker jumbo jet one as it will be less airiel and will tend to be slower. The same goes for males.
I would recomend to you blue hawk, what I have outlined above.
Choose pere into saker (pere/saker) and choose the smallest female. NOT the largest male!!!
This bird will have a different wing loading to the largest female, but will be more airiel, It will still keep the intelligence of the saker but will have a crisper wingbeat and I believe it will be more like what you are looking for.
Good look
and remember you weant to see the whole clutch together, preferably get in early, help the breeder catch up and block the birds with him as a helper. then you get to measure, weigh and examine all birds and then take your pick. And keep saying to yourself...
" Imust not get the biggest one, I must not get the biggest one, I must not get the biggest one!"

Thanks for that Omygod
Not that its important, but my mates 'jumbo' is also a harris. which inevitably leads to the "is that an eagle mister?'question from most of the uninitiated.
But that does beg the question is it more important for the falcon/tiercel to have the outright speed and weight to finish the crow off, or agility and the chance of injury on the ground?

because sakers are cheap and it would be a waste of peregrine to use saker semen when you can use barbary or gyr instead.
Can you explain this? The breeder I'm getting the pere/saker from also does pere/barbary too, what are the comparisons?

From my experience it is as broad as it is long, i agree that Peri/Sakers come in many forms both in body shape, size and agression levels.
Whilst i have no particular reason to promote him, Gary Wall nr Locherbie produces some of the best rook hawking stock i have ever seen, i fly a female bred by him whom i would say is prob one of the best Tight flight longwings i have ever owned, my mate has her sister, says the same.
So get the right breeder and ask for names of folk who are flying his stock and collect references.
Seen some good males too!
