Thats one hell of a big subject. I think you need to read a LOT more. If you have difficulties break your question down so they are not quite so general

red's are lovely birds but they are not AS FORGIVING to mistakes as a harris.

as others have said ask the forum for what you need assitance with not just a cry for a generic help.

is it a male or female red tail?
have you got a local centre or mentor that can help/teach?
go and do a course it will refresh what youve forgotten or teach you what you dont know
as for manning little and often
at the moment you seem to be a little out of your depth.

From what I was told the first bit of advise would be to buy a first aid kit;)

Seriously though matey, If you are going to do this right you need to learn quickly. You say you have a mentor? Can't he help you?

One of the main things I have learned about Red Tails is you need to gain their trust as they can hurt a little. Take the time to man the bird, don't be seen to be removing food as this may lead to painful incidents later on. Get the bird used to you and make sure she is comfortable with you touching her head and feet as she is eating but don't rush into it. This is what I was told.

Try to get hold of a copy of The Red Tailed Hawk by Liam McGranaghan, it's a good book and will give you something to do while you are sat manning her

It's down to personal preference mate, differant people have differant ways. Personally I leave the bird for a couple of days to get her used to a new environment. I will then slowly approach the bird with a small piece of food, if she takes it (which generally they won't for the first few days) great, if not leave it by her and back off. IMO this assosiates your visits with food and settles the bird.

I the wait until it is almost dark and then slowly make in and pick the bird up on the fist but always remember especially with a parent reared bird that they are likely to be petrified and any sudden movement could put the training back quite severely.

I then take the bird inside with me (and only me to start with, I have sent the Mrs to bed early on more than one occasion) Sit down with the bird in a dimly lit room and watch TV with some food on the fist, once again she probably won't eat but it's still early days.

If she bates constantly I'll take her back to her mews, and try again a little later. I'd rather have a bird tied to my fist by food rather than jesses.

Gradually she will settle and you will be able to man her outside in the daylight.

One thing I have learned though (and this is not aimed at anyone) don't feel you should have her flying free in 7 days. Some may be able to but not everyone, my record so far was 3 weeks.

I've only been at this a couple of years myself mate so there will be many who can offer better advice this is just how I do it.

Hello Chris.

I have three pieces of advice which you may take or ignore, at your leisure.

:Stick with your mentor and follow his advice.
:Read every single thread on RT's on this forum and discuss your thoughts with your mentor.
:Ask specific questions as this is more likely to get you specific answers..and discuss those answers with your mentor before you implement them.

I also have a pair of the Ben Long bullitt jesses that you blame for the loss of your HH and they were specifically recommended NOT to be used for tethering to the bow. So some peoples advice is best not followed isn't it.?

Dropping weight and the likes at this stage, will be best decided depending on circumstances, ie wether it is fat weight or not.

I think possibly before you do anything, is to let the bird settle for a week or so, whilst you do a bit of reading, as since it is 4, it probably knows the score more than yourself. There is no need to rush into things.

I don't have direct experience of a RT...but I would not have got a RT of that age from anyone unless I trusted them completely and knew every last thing about it's history.
