View Full Version : Hood exchange? Would it work?

I am fed up with buying hoods that don't fit. Usually, the beak opening has to be trimmed anyway "ruining" the hood so it can't be returned to the maker. So we end up with a draw full of useless hoods!
Now, if we exchanged hoods amongst ourselves, would that solve the problem?
I have an anglo-indian hood that I purchased for a 1lb 10oz male gos. It was tight around the beak, so I trimmed it. (I know what I am doing -- I used to make my own). Of course, that makes the hood effectively "larger". So it is now too large for the gos, also for a 1lb 6oz peregrine. But I bet it is exactly what SOMEONE is looking for!
I did the same with an American made Dutch hood, which is now also slightly too large for the gos. But I use it anyway as I have nothing else.
I put the Martin Jones hood on Ebay with a starting price of £25. It cost me £40! Did I sell it? Heck no! Didn't even get a bid! Anyone want a larger Martin Jones hood and got a smaller one to swap?

All of the suppliers I ahve bought hoods from do exchange them if they do not fit the bird- Ben Long, Westweald Falconry, Hoods UK, etc., so try them.

After you have trimmed the beak opening? How many times are they going to do this? True, I didn't even bother to ask, so maybe you are right.

Hi
I do a hood exchange....u r guarateed a fit!
If you pay for a hood, all u do is send it back and I will replace it with another size...:)
The only condition is that it comes back to me in the same condition that it arrived with u!
1lb 6oz Pere Tiercel = size 4
Gos Fem = 8.5 normally and Gos Male = Size 5 hood

Lol Varmint... those hoods will be on display on the "Falconers Forum" stand at the fair. Hopefully "the man".... Alan Gates (Eagle Hunter and Kazakh expert) will sign a couple for me so I can auction them :)
Here is one of my Kazah hoods (Berkutchi) on Varmints Bald Eagle (a little too big)

Somehow the above quotes don't seem to be compatible!
So it is back to square one. If you trim a hood in an attempt to make a perfect fit, nobody is going to take it back. But it could still be a perfectly good hood for a slightly larger bird owner by another falconer.
So, is there any interest in a hood exchange?
I have a Martin Jones anglo-indian that I paid £40 for. It is too large for a 1lb 6oz peregrine tiercel and too large for a 1lb 10oz goshawk. Anyone got a smaller hood of similar quality they want to swap for it? "On approval" on both sides, each pays own postage. If not, I have a useless piece of junk cluttering up my sideboard!

I bet that between us all, we could fill a skip with the junk we have collected over the years that is no use to man nor beast.
