View Full Version : YORKSHIRE KITES & PEREGRINES
Watched a programme today about Kites on an estate in Yorkshire,Harewood Estate :?: been re-introduced,..there was a piece on there about a copper taking dna samples from young peres, his name was Steve Dowling,on there he stated that peres need watching because their eggs get took by collectors, but he said, and this is the reason im mentioning this, that the main problem is Falconers taking the chicks :!: i think this needs to be addressed by the yorkshire clubs/members,perhaps a letter or meeting to re address things, and help establish facts from his statement.
Thoght this was worth mentioning.GAZ.

My local raptor study group were crying out for new members to help out with monitoring various species, peregrine in particular. A mate who is in the group asked if I would mind helping out given my interest in BOP and reasonably knowledge of Scottish raptors.
I agreed for him to propose me at the next meeting on the condition he told them I was an austringer, although I only flew non-indiginous species and had no interest in keeping falcons.
Seemingly you could have heard a pin drop when he told them this and they were not at all keen. The guy responsible for peregrine recording however was a more reasonable-thinking guy and had the decency to at least meet with me at my place to sound me out and see my birds and I now cover quite a few nest sites.
I've never heard of young being taken by falconers in my area but there seems to be an ignorance going around that if your love of raptors manifests itself by you being a falconer rather than a raptor group member you are a thief!! I am doing my best to persuade then otherwise and to be as responsible a member of the group as I can (I didn't even visit the Goldie eyrie I came across last season  )
Do ya think they'll let me do the Goshawks next season

also toe-rags who think they have a massive value to falconers, maybe many years ago a few falconers may have done such things but not these days.
