View Full Version : Black Rabbits
Went away for the weekend and on friday afternoon i noticed a black rabbit sitting beside a hole in a field i was fishing beside. I thought to myself, hey thats a sight. then on saturday evening i seen 2 baby black rabbits in the same field. I always thought a black rabbit was a mutant, something like albino. But after seeing the two young rabbits im thinking it could be genetic? And if so will the hawk still attack black rabbits?
p.s do use think it may just be a escaped domestic rabbit?

Ther are several scottish islands known for their black rabbits, they are occasional colour mutations, but they usually don't last long, as they stand out from the crowd. They could also be escaped pets, I have twice bolted a grey rabbit with a white stripe around it in some local woods this season, both Harris's chased it both times, but seemed unwilling to connect, I guess it just didn't look right.

i have seen loads in the field i went to. I assumed they were escaped pets that had bred with the wild population, but why are they always pure black?

used to see brown/orange, grey and white and black one down a track in shropshire. Got to have been escapee but our house was the only cottage within a 5 mile radius, so must have mated with the local population. What I would do to get one now!!!

we have had the odd gingery fawn ones turn up over the last 15 yrs. They seem to be around for a few months then dissapear, then next season they are back again. There are very few people who would have kept tame rabbits in the area, but I recon they are throw backs to a pet bunny. The fact they vanish for a while makes me think that something is happy to make a meal of them !!

We've got black and ginger rabbits in Caithness, I don't think they are ex-domestic, just colour variations.
And do use think a hawk would attack one though?

In a word Yes
Never seen a bolted black rabbit yet that a hawk wouldn't chase. It doesn't seem to make any difference

Hey Sean,
We have plenty of black rabbits in this part of Devon where I live,
and they have bred here at a place called Coombe Lake on the coast, for long before I was born.
My mate Dave caught one last season with his young Female Harris no probs!

laughed my arse of last weekend me and the missus drove past a little blacky sat at the side of the road with a middle aged couple that had pulled over to try and pet the bloody thing. apparently they are on the increase and some peeps think they are lost domestics................aaaaarrrgg poor little hawk baits
I've had few back rabbits round my place. Last year i 2 balck and 2 normal baby rabbits who used to like to run round the mews in the mornings when i turned up. Seen quite a few black rabbits in various places.
Also caught a rabbit that had a white fur in a strip going from 1 front leg ove it's shoulders to the other leg and a white stripe running down it's face. Was told it had what was known as dutch markings. Soon as it came out the bird went for it but it got away. Only once though. The second time the bird caught it

in a lot of animals, black is a dominant gene, so if you put a black and an other colour together the chances are higher that the young will be black. I know there are exceptions like labradors etc. but may be that's what has happened in rabbits????????????

Black rabbits: What do they call them in your area? In Scotland, I've always heard them referred to as "ministers" (i.e. the Scottish name for a vicar).
