That is really a daft question really, its not a competition to be the best breeder,
if your talking numbers of birds bred, then Nick fox, Falcon mews are probably one of the most experienced breeders in the UK, breeding well over 200 falcons last year, [ not many independent breeders come close to that amount]
there are many back yard falcon breeders who produce top quality birds but not the quantity,
I have been told that G Butterworth is the best man on Ai

Of course it is not a competion, but it is always good to know where you get good quality birds. I never asked for quantity.
Thx for the answers so far

It all depend on what Falcon your after, certain small breeders specialize in breeding a good line of falcons, this have been proved by top class game hawks by very good falconers, usually at first by the chap who first flown and bred them,
many large breeders do not have the time to to this, if its peregrines then i would go for a small selective breeders with proven game hawks, who never needs to advertise his birds for sale,

What species? quality? or quantity? what discpiline to be used in?, unfortunately there are so many variables. There are many fine breeders, especially small independants, however I understand your sentiment I think as tehre are as many if more 'sharks' out there than bonafide breeders . Where do you start?? I would suggest speaking to those you trust, seing well known blood lines being flown and take your time before purchase. I am not being critical here, just trying to be helpful.
You have already had a well rspected Gos breeder answer your thread , so hopefully other highly respected breeders will have their input. One last thing.
I often hear of folk bemoaning the ciost of their hawks , I remember about 15 years abgo( coulpd have been longer ) having to pay £2,500 for a` German Finnish Female ' & to close the deal I alkso had to agree to but a Male Harris at the same time for £700!
This next paragrapgh is not meant at anyone , apart from those that winge a bout prices of hawks. If you new how much effort / care / angst/ disspointment/ let alone time/ cost of food/ pre reg ( in case of Art 10/ schyed 4 etc etc that goes into breeding you would perhaps understand that prices quoted these days are in fact lamost derisory comapred to effort expended in producing fine quality off spring
I do hope this is respectful. I do not mean top be controversial, but hail from a time when we had to put upo with what we could get , rather than pick or chose species, let alone breeders/ bloodlines etc,
This is just my rnatings

What qualities are to be measured or judge upon ?

For me personaly it is importent, is the bird from a good line, are the parents crossed because of their performans and not avaidabilaty, resitance to deseases, how long has the line been bred selectively.
Who do you think breeds the best quality birds and why?
It would be nice to have a list of good breeders, including the people that do not adbvertise or have homepages.
Thx

Moritz, some people cannot do justice to any bop, no matter where it is obtained from. Some people can obtain results out a falcon/hawk that others could never achieved.
So the same bird owned by 2 different owners could produce vastly different results from the same lines/stock etc.
The hawk should be bred in a clean well designed environment and fed on a quality diet. The parents should have been flown but not necessary.

Hello Ade
He used to run the eggs which i used his semen for, [ sort of trust] I do it all myself now, learnt allot from him though on incubation, invested in top of the range incubators, using a X8 for the gos eggs and grumbachs for all the falcon eggs, cost me a fortune but i think incubation is the big downfall of many breeders,
who said breeding birds was a way to make money :?

Hi Mick,
Know what you mean mate but that falcon must have helped out with the investment in kit eh?
I use a grumbach myself and a few RollX's but having a sod of a season so far, just not enough hours in the day and i havent really been weighing my eggs down to form, but fingers crossed all running well at the moment, got a few pipping today!
looking for Peregrine Semen if anyone knows of any produced not too far away?
If im lucky i might just make enough to pay the electric bill!

I'd go for Nick Fox, some people knock him as he is "commercail", but all the birds I have had from him have been 1st class
