It depends on what you want for a tail mount, there are plenry of brass tube tail mounts for sale, for a few quid each. Marshalls do a really nice aluminium one, but you also ned a special crimping tool. You can easily make plectrum ones with guitar plectrums, I like these as they spread the weight of bell and transmitter over a few feathers and stop the transmitter dropping through.

Hi,
we use the marshall tail mounts and they are very good. They work with every transmitter. If someone wants to try them but does not want to buy the tool just give me a shout. Just come up to my mates house and we will do it for you. It is in scotland near Perth.

Has anyone tried these ones on Griffs website http://www.m-jhoods.co.uk/Main_page.htm?

Not those specifically but I use something very similar on my birds. Very good is all I can say.

I only use tailbells, one of these mounts allows you to attach a bell and telemetry. Very good!!!

Gary,
After using tailmounts on Goshawks for the last 5 seasons and seeing how center decks feathers can be pulled out or tail mounting snagging on brambles etc. I would keep the tail mount arrangement as small as possible and as close to the feathers as you can.

You can make your own quite easily, cut out a piece of leather in the shape of a guitar plectrum. Cut a small section of brass tube for the telemetry mounting clip to fix to. Punch 4 holes in the leather, 2 for the brass tube to fix to the plectrum (tie wrap) - 2 holes at the top for the tie wraps to fix to the center decks. Neat job, low profile and the leather is flexible on the feathers.

I wouldn't use any of the tailmounts made from plastic as thick or as large as these or the falconry electronic ones either.

Sounds good, is that the stuff you can get from a model shop, what diameter?
Cheers

Yes most likely, around 4 or 5 mm - you can use a pair of pliers and "flatten" the profile of the round tube to form a more elliptical shape.

Gaz hows the tube attached?

OutFlying
03-05-2005, 09:42 PM
cut 2 slots, then pass the tailmount thru the leather and flatten the ends (its a tail mount not brass tubing). If you use brass tube - punch 2 holes in a vertical line and use a tie wrap to secure it

SJ, Place 1 cable tie around 1 deck feather leaving it full length with the tail of the tie wrap pointing up and inwards - pull tight, repeat for second deck feather. Then place the leather plectrum over the tails of the tie wraps going through the top 2 holes from below. Then run a fresh tie wrap down on the tail protruding through the leather from the top to form a tight seal ( repeat for second tie wrap) cut excess material - if done right it will not ever become detached.

hope this makes sense............................................. ....

Gaz, I'd always used a similar system but instead of tie wraps used a thin leather strip and glue. But on collecting the gos from Chris - was shown this method. I was a bit worried at first until he showed me the pint glass full of moulted out tail feathers with the mounts still attached. Now everyone I know who flies a gos locally uses the same method - it works. Last season my imprint gos hit a branch and remove both decks but the plectrum and transmitter were still attached securely to the feathers. How lucky was that  ?

HM. Gaz has put the pictures up - can you not follow my description - if not I'll try again. You'll have to wait a few months to see the pictures of it being fitted to a hawk.

I could do a step by step pictures on a simulated set up i.e 2 pencils - but can't reduced the photo's small enough to post.

Hi OutFlying, have had to read your post 3 times & finally have worked out how easy (I think this is) This is due to me being thick, not your excellent explanation
One thing , am I right in thinking final cable tie has 2'buckles' ( don't know what else to call them, but where you pass thin end thro) one below & one above tailmount?

the talk of tall mount is ok until weight of the system makes the bird throw the feather or even worse it gets removed on a fence
have you considered a body harness and mounting the telemetry between the wings high on the back?
fod for thought and will work well on a new hawk or falcon
