I was given an 8mth old male RT 3 weeks, I believe that some basic training had been undertaken but the bird had not been flown free. I have always flown HH's and never had a screamer but have no experience of RT's but shortly after cutting down his wieght and starting work with the creance he has become quite vocal and aggressive. Any Ideas

Get him entered and he'll probably quieten down. R'gards Rob.

You need to channel that aggression towards his quarry.

Hi Lamby, welcome to the forum. Are you able to find out more about his background? Might be a good starting point for working from.

Not really, He was a rescue bird ! - which might give a rather large clue!!!
He is certainly very hand shy - pecks at any thing that moves - awkward when wanting to change his jesses but not particularly footy.

How come I never get a freebie?? :) Sounds like you've got your hands full, hope you keep us posted. Where are you, you may find someone near to you.

Lamby I had the same problem with my male RT!
He was nice bird until I didn't cut him down on real flying weight. He became very agressive, and very footie ! There was only one way to deal with that-hard hunting!
First free flight was on cock ph. and he was sucsessful-I had littel problem to take a rest of the cock after he fulled his crop, but after next few flights he was much better!
Please inform us about his future behaviour!
I hope that will help you!

Has got one advantage and that is you will never lose him!! You can probably hear him 2 fields distant?

If you live in town I would give him to someone else, hes going to be a major headache.

As for the aggresion let his hackles go down before you approach him on the kill and fly him following on mode to get him more independent & give your ears a rest.

My 1st bird was a screaming Creche reared Male RT - he is now 13 years old and silent out hunting and only ever had me in the face once and that was the 1st 2 weeks flying free.

Much more adrenaline rush than a Harris but treat with respect!!

I had littel problem to take a rest of the cock

sorry i am gutter minded and immature...that made me laugh

I am sure the screaming will improve after a while, once he is hunting and making consistent kills the aggression should settle down too.

HI AND welcome TO THE FORUM LAMBY.

I think your bird is too low in weight and needs to have have his weight up and then reduced slowly.

That will make him worse - now the weights down hunt him - with all the baby rabbits about this is your best opportunity to improve his manners!

Don't expect Screaming to go away in a year - could take 2 years or more......

I would personelly want to know what the birds keel is like and I bet SHARP as hell, and it was probably like that when poor John got the hawk?

It will have to be sharp with the tempretures creeping up like they are :)

I think we NEED more input from Lamby before we say more as it may be detrimental to the birds health.

Tis true he has a sharp keel but is not as responsive as I would expect - I don't want to take him down any further. Thinking about bringing his wieght up and then reducing it. Did I say he wasn't footy ha! my right hands like a pin cushion!!!!!!!

Thanks for making me feel welcome. Its a shame that many 'clubs' can't do the same!

I would bet he was dropped too quick and this is what has caused it. I have never had or trained a RT that was nasty and loads of people talk about them. I think if you treat their weigh more like you would that of a Gos then it would prevent this from happening.

Personally, although, one can only prove this through doing it and talk is cheap, I would raise the weigh and work him slowly to a good weight, which should be higher, they are different to HHs and need a different approach.

Where do you live John?

little bit off teh topic, but am i right in thinking buzzards are generally pretty vocal anyway as they are buzzards, even PP birds

Just south of Manchester. I think you might be right about the wieght issue but is it too late. I think he needs a lot more manning, he is very twichy - certainly different to a Harris - I never flown a Gos

OK get in touch with Jonny Bravo he done a male Red and done a good job and can steer you in the right direction.

It is never too late you will just make the situation worse if you persist. Just increase the weight and leave the bird in a mews on its own I would say and then start mega manning and VERY slow weight reduction according to its responses.

HTH?

take his weight up when there at fat weight less aggressive then start touching ie feet ,legs and stoke the front of him first show him your open hand then he will know you have no food in your hands, then slowly stroke him you will get a few little pecks but at fat weight will not be that aggressive and will soon settle then you should end up with a 100% manned bird and when weight dropped he will be the same

i may have been very lucky with this hawk,he took 30 kills in his first season unassisted by a dog or ferrets, which i thought was a great season.

cheers jase.
