I saw a Chilean Blue eagle at the falconry fair today(mon 2005).
Personaly I wouldn't have a use for one and I certainly wasn't taken by its looks, But I suppose it takes all sorts! :)

It has made me curious though.
Does anyone know how they perform in the field?
What can they be likened to in flying style?(I thought it looked like a bloody great big Swainsons  )

Seems like a bit of an Ooo ahh bird to me :!:

They are not as fast off the fist as Harris's of Gos, but otherwise similar to an overgrown Harris's in flight, so fast due their size. They seen to mann down quite quickly as wild caught birds, I don't know if they are bred here yet, bit it's likely they will do soon.

Imported by Steve, only because people want them, for Ooooh Ahhh or whatever, but not for me!

I have got quite some experience with them. One centered I worked for breed them and fly them in their show. They are very good flyers especially on the soar. The center flys them in a cast with stepps, twany, bald and whitetailed eagles. No problem. The ones I got to know (5 of them) were very relaxed gentle birds.

The guys at the fair were saying that the male (the blue one) flies at around 3 1/2lb and they fly him at rabbits etc. basically the same as a harris but as HM states the Oooooh Aghhhh factor.

I love 'em, think they're lovely birds but a tad over kill on rabbits, and at a price of around £2000 I'll stick with the HH.

£2000? That is way over price!

I've been told by 3 people in the UK, Eagle Heights and Falconiformes (Dutch breeder)yesterday, and a local centre, that this is the regular price.

It also depends if people are prepared to pay that.

Jesus christ  £2000 you could buy a pair of goshawks for that and feed them for a year with the change!.

Chilean Blue eagle? No thank you :vom:

I think they are usefull birds as they are big, but not overkill and not very dangerouse (not saying that they arnt - they are!:)) and the males have nice weight's, the female's r 6lb I think? I talked to the guy but forgot lol! If you think about it, it's like a blue, overgrown red tail with extra attitude!I was told he had gone after canada geese, a muntjak deer (yes! wasnt expecting that one!) pheasant, rabbit and hare. So its got a little bit wider veriaty, and its nice to handle, real good looking etc. It cud be worth that £2000 lol. I'm saving!

Hannah, don't believe everything you hear and once you've been hunting with hawks for a while you'll realise that they aren't required.

Hi Hannah,
I think I is better to invest your money in a Gos. But if you want to buy one go hunting with this guy and look how the bird is out in the field.

Hi ,

I think that the blue eagle is the best eagle for demo and hunting .
Small , fast , gentle , nice , and hunting very well at hares and rabbit .
For me , if you like to fly eagles , start with the blue one .
Price max 4000 € male or female .

See you ,

Like others already stated, they are very good flyers, especially soaring, excellent display birds, and a very very gentle temper. My girlfriend hunted one from the fist and following on in the trees, was not the fastest from the fist, but from the tree not bad, like a redtail, not as keen though. Considering the price of 2000-3000 Quid atm, well worth if you want a display bird, but for hunting I think you're better off with either of the well used species.

Wow! They do look just like our(north america) Swainson's hawk...just a bit bigger... how odd, but neat.

I've witnessed many arguments about this species. The latin name indicates eagle, size and behaviour more a buzzard. Obviously the Falconry Dispaly Centres call them eagle, just sounds better than buzzard. I personally just call them Aguja, as in my opinion they are neither eagle nor buzzard, just something in between.
