Info please on when to take a gos from its parents for imprinting.
I am hoping to have young gosses in the next 2wks. Previously I have sold them only as P/R but I have a guy who wants one for imprinting and he wants it at 5 days?. To further confuse matters, my rings have been sent to a Wildlife Inspector :( and as I don't usually put my rings on till about 10 days this presents a bit of a problem. Any suggestions.

Goldie,
5 days is a bit early, but the falconer has the risk not you!
From a trainers perspective i would like the bird between 7 to 10 days.
Once i have it i can ensure it's conditioning isn't compromised.
Chances are the breeder is going to be much busier than you are eg/ having to look after many other birds and issues.....you only get one shot, no regrets!!

This is spot on, the first social imprint gos I had was from Harry Gilbert who ran it on for me for about 5 weeks, and he did a brilliant job but most breeders wont. I have seen goshawks that have been imprinted terribly by the breeders due to lack of time, noisy aggresive etc. 7-10 days old and run them on yourself thats the only way of being 100% sure of what you will get.

It is not problem to imprint it with 14 days, I try and it was very nice bird.
What do you peopel mean about changing imprinted birds, have any of you try that?
I try and it is a brilliant bird, offcours you must have some very good falconry friend, who is also expirience in that job!
Your opinions?

Hi Goldie
I let mine go at 14 days minimum, but these are imprinted from day 1, incubator hatched and tweezer fed from day 1 in a group, also at 5 days it will not be rung yet and DEFRA will want to witness the ringing, so the only thing you can do is pull the chick from its parents at 4/5 days. tweezer feed till ringing, and start the imprinting process, but it will need heat at this stage, and 5 feeds a day, worst that having a baby,
from the age of 9 days they should be able to feed themselfs from a feeding pot,

Outflying, under parents. The first line of my post suggests this  I suppose there WAS a small chance I would have incubated and put them back with her right away

Hi Billy, as I said earlier I don't normally ring them till at least 10 days and as I don't really want to pull one and start the process from 5 days myself, I think I will give him the option of waiting till then. I assume at 10 days it is still capable of being properly imprinted? or would you disagree?

I thought you mentioned before that you hatched in an incubator, might be mistaken though. A friend of mine parent hatched his gosses last year and the female went for imprinting at 10 - 12 days - no problems.

When my friend had closed rung his gosses and the bloke came to collect his female for imprinting (he was second in line for a female) he took the second biggest chick out of the 3 chicks. He ended up with the only female and the other 2 were males. At 10 days the chicks were very similar.

When I ring them at 10 days I reckon you can have an educated GUESS by the ease or difficulty of putting on the male ring, I tend to put both rings on all the youngsters. In this particular case I am covering myself by charging him for a female which he would prefer, and give him a refund if it turns out to be a male. He did say he would take a male if there were no females so it shouldn't be a problem

This guy will have first pick also as I don't advertise them till I have them.
He only new about them through a friend. I usually only sell them as P/R
