I got a male hh goin for my daughter and he's very keen at 1lb-8 but hes not wanting to enter, i have dropped his weight down slowly to 1lb-5 and he just sits watching bunnies running under him but he has hit the real dead bunny like a rocket when training, he did chase a cock pheasant but didnt go in with any real power, even at 1lb-8 he follows on ok but still tries to land on me or drops to the floor next to me then walks after me, with the expirience i have had this tells me he is still to light, what am i doin wrong?

how does the birds keel feel like at the weights mentioned there?
Why not try using a dragged bunny carcass and letting your bird have a good feed off it? It may meen you could loose a day or two but could help to give your bird a little more motivation in the chase.

with young hh its all confidence if hes hunting weight is right ?? needs to be fed on fresh warm rabbit and while hes doing so tug at it so he keeps his footing going then use real dead rabbits dragged for him and let him feed on it then what you need is to start bolting rabbits for him he will switch on m8 ;)

Mal,

Its daft to give weight advice on a forum, so like the others I wont. I am not a million miles from you and happy to pop over and have a look/feel of your bird for you - even come out in the field with you (I wont bring birds)

Shout if you want a hand - just cant do today!!

Mike

I have had this with a male Harris in the past. Weight wasn't the problem or the answer in my case.

My bird would chase the dummy bunny hard - but he ignored the real ones. We had mixie at the time and he wouldn't look at them either.

Then one day i was taking some German falconers out - they had never seen a Harris fly - i was busy making excuses for him and hoping we didn't see a rabbit!

The german guys proved to be very enthusiastic beaters and soon put up a rabbit in some woodland. I don't know why but the sight of a hard running rabbit made my bird chase it really hard - he caught it after a really good flight (the bird was in a tree when the rabbit was flushed).

I think its a question of getting the right flush. If your bird is keen and obedient and has a fast response time at 1lb 8 - then i wouldn't go cutting him too much from there.

Get out hunting with him - one of those flushed rabbits will switch him on and then there won't be any stopping him!

very nice gesture and i hope you are taken up on your kind offer, my Fhh will stand and look at a bunny if it is sitting still, wont chase it till it running which can often be too late...lol
