Ive been cleaning me redtail out about once a fortnight since he,s been going through his moult .
I have,nt really handled him, when i do go into clean him he,s jumping about and seems on edge .
Will this upheaval cause stress marks in his feathers and damage .
Point me in the right direction lads as to how often to clean him .
His waters cleaned daily put thats next to the door to clean him the mew out properly takes a good hour ?
Thanks
Johnny

My HH, seems to prefer it when I go in to him!!! I still weigh him every day and sit in there with him playing. He has a green plastic golf ball which he picks up and chases about the enclosure. I'll go in and throw it and he fetches it
He also prefers to eat when I'm in there or off the fist!!!! If I'm in there with him, he regularly comes and sits on my shoulder and preens my neck at ear. It's strange as he is a creche reared bird but they all have their own individual characters.
Try giving him a good feed at the time you are doing the cleaning, the eating might take away his interest in what you are doing.

Saker sucker......you been in my mews? Thats exactly the same behaviour as Cody, who is also crech reared! Sits on the perch next to me telling me if I've missed a bit. About once a week if its really messy. :)

I feed my PMRT every day out in my yard, never feed in the mew. I believe it's important to maintain the relationship with the bird. Weigh every day. This routeen helps to reduce stress. Clean mew once a week, typically on sunday which is a no hunting day during the season.

good point this johnny, i was just saying to the guy's at the fair how laid back sky was at this time, however over the last week or so she's become a git, constantly climbing the walls when i go in,if i go in and ignore her she isnt to bad, but if i try and pay any sort of attention to her she gets very up set, i'm assuming she's reached some sort of peak as regards food and so sees me now as a threat if i give her eye contact.
i'm not too worried i still go in on a daily basis and have a quick clean about and give a quick spray of anti mite from time to time, i deliberately avoid eye contact and just go about my bussiness, i find since she's been acting like this that a 10 minute spring clean daily to keep on top of things is alot safer than a good one hour clean out,i have started to gradualy reduce her diet,i've baught smaller food stuffs, mice small rats, ect to help control her intake, i'll let you know if she settles back down.

Saker Sucker.......If I said YES you'd call me a liar. But yep, a yellow fluro golfy, from me girlfriends da. Cody stops at playing with it himself, but will give it a chase if I chuck it about a bit.

It keeps them occupied and stops them getting bored. A women in our club decided last year to give her HH a ball and she curses me now. She says that she has to play ball with him everytime she goes into his enclosure.

As with a lot of things hawky, I wish I'd shut me mouth. It's hardly in line with the 'stealy eyed dealer of death' image is it? What next, small pantaloons for their long legs, booties and beak wipes...........now HANG ON THAT SOUNDS BRILLIANT..............!!!!!!!!!

I'll draw the line at the ball; at least it keeps his footing capabilities sharp!

It also takes his mind off of the cleaning out around him.

Thanks for the replies lads !
Ive just cleaned me mew out and had me red on the lawn and fed him ,he,s still jumping everywhere ?as jiff said it seems as though he,s got to fat weight and wants nothing to do with me .
This happened over a few days really when i started his moult .
Ill try what you say lads and bring him on the lawn each night and clean him out once a week ,im only a learner so i could be going in the wrong direction as ive read and heard .
Thanks
