Hi. I would like to know if anyone can give me any advice on keeping barn owls.
My dad has been offered a young barn owl as someone is fed up with it. We used to keep a barn owl years ago but a refresher on their care and any new advice is very welcome as I am sure owl keeping has changed alot in the years since.
I have ordered a book about keeping owls off amazon but I'd like as much info as I can before we actually agree to take the owl and build the avairy. There doesn't seem to be much info on the internet about keeping owls

Volence..hello...you will get the gist of certain folks on here after a while. Weasle for example is a yank who flies his dirthawks (or is that a dirty redtail:) )at rabbits! I am also cut from the same cloth. Unfortunately owls are not considered by some to be worthy of falconry. I however love Harry Potter and have often caught owls with my hawk, and have to say they a delicious (joking):) :). Ignore what some say and ask a member called BUBO, as she/he is the resident expert. Welcome and have fun

Ben

Thanks for the reply. Weasels post just seemed a bit odd, since this bit of the forum is for owl keepers. Hopefully Bubo will read this, I have seen a couple of his/her posts and the person does indeed seem very knowledgable

Hm, how would you prepare the owl for eating then? :tonqe:

After being plucked and cleaned, I marinade over night in a mix of spices with a hint of rosemary until soaked in to the meat. They I simply stick it on the BBQ and baste with a succulent sweet sauce until golden brown. Serve on a bed of wild rice and steamed vegies. A good red wine, such as a Cabernet Franc, goes well to bring out the flavor........Serves two.

Unfortunately the guy hasn't said how young, I believe that it is probably a young adult. Don't worry about boring me with info, its just what I need!

good then i shall do what i do best, ramble on about owlies with out gettting "yeah great love', sure, if you say so whatever :P

I suppose a good place to start would be the aviary. I know that even though they are small birds and hide away all day anyway they still need room to stretch their wings and fly around a bit. So a comfy aviary as big as you can get it is fine but minimum 3 x 3 x (2.5 - 3m high) with a nice hidy box in there.

as for food, well all the good stuff  mice, rats quail and bunny and of course doc now and again but i suppose it is up to you really what you choose to give but my owl much prefers his mice over anything else along with a yummy juicy bunny. :P i add supplement once a week just to make sure he does get more or less everything he needs. he looks good and healthy like that.

now for manning (my favourite bit) then every minute every day :P

just one thing though, check to see what the current owner is feeding him on so you dont radically change his diet as that would upset him/her aswell.

hope this helps but if you want to know anything else just yell  i am only too happy to talk about owls :P

Don't forget the SA37 Bubo cause it's good for the feathers, as well as the balanced diet of course.
Albie..
PS Here's a good looking lad, his name is Finley.

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh albie he is a stunner!!!

when kadabra was an owlet i used bone powder in his meals as that is what the breeder used so i carried on. i have a feeling it is the same as SA37. it is just that sa 37 can not be bought here anymore. then once he was hard penned i switched to the vits just to keep up the good looks and good looking he is hehehe.

For all these Hawk and Falcon owners Bubo.
I raised Finley and my Harris Hawk Nimbus from young un's, for the first six months or so I fed them Nutrabol calcium supplement I just dusted a chick leg a couple of times a week, then as they got older I moved on to SA37 on the Owl breeders advice.
Albie..

Thanks for all the help guys. Unfortunately the guy has already sold the owl. I guess he just wanted to get rid of it quick. :(
