My recently acquired 2nd season FHH has been flying free for a week, and very responsive following on and quiet, Today, I thought it would be nice if My partner qould fly her. She flew to her fist 3 or 4 times great, Then she started to fly and try and grab the titbit with her talons and then fly by. What can be done? Is it a good/bad idea to have her flying for different people? Johnny

Could be a number of things mate, weight, boredom etc..........

I would stop flying her to the fist for fun, get her killing and use a garnished glove for necessary recall only i.e. After a missed kill or to bring the bird in to get her under control. Endless flying to the fist for tiny pieces of food will only **** her off, encourage bad habbits (snatching) and mistrust.

Flying her to different people isn't a problem and should be encouraged if you want a fully socialised hawk but do it in a hunting environment, much the same as the bird would co-operatively hunt in the wild.

Our HHs will fly to other people, personally I think it is a good thing just in case of problems. Manning by your partner may help along with a slight reduction in your FHHs weight dependant on how low you are already flying her.

Not ignoring your question John but is she entered yet? I remember you saying you were huntin her Thurs with your mentor, and am curious how you got on...

I would imagine its a weight issue as in she's a little high, but without knowing details of this I couldn't say for sure. I do know when my bird had got a little overweight she did exactly as you said with my brother. When her weight is right she goes straight to the glove, no matter who wears it..

Thanks Gerard and Others. She was exactly yhe same weight as yesterday. 2-3.7 oz, and she was brill. with me, I gather its a manning issue for my O H to do. My family and grandson are coming over at Xmas, and it would be kinda nice for her to fly to them, Who knows He may want to be a falconer?? Gerard Evie was a bit wary of My Mentor when He came over hunting, NOT A RABBIT OR PHESS. in sight very blank johnny.

Good idea to fly her to lots of people. Quite a few Harris will try and pich the food off the glove. Did she do in in her first year? Its very important that who ever is hold the meat on the glove doesn't let her fly off with iy so she gets that and the second bit as well or the the habit will quickly become a bad habit that is hard to break. They are clever birds and if you never let the meat go she will soon work out its costing her extra effort to get no more food then it will stop.
