It must be the only thing i didn't buy at the fair. How do you make a tail guard that will last? Preferably easy enough for a retard like me to make. It will be for a male harris, may only be used for picking him up but its still something i want to make.

CZ,
Have a look at a real one  . http://www.falconryforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=3117
Second page tail sheath - photograph whilst in action, I'm in the process of making a few for Gaz. Made from Damp proof course, fits over transmitter and bell - saves the tail on a kill or whilst on the bow perch etc.

Mine is similar to OutFlying's one except I use a soft transparent plastic that does not bend if that makes sense?
Same concept, no need to remove the telemetry to fit the tail guard, just pop over the bell and away.

sounds very like Nf's Xray film. however mine does alllow airflow in and aounrd feathers even when TG is on. bear in mind I am developing this product, only heard good things about it but to be hoinest I have yet to try it ( all my hawks are either moulting or breeding)

SJ, 2 problems with your type of design (similar to falconry originals).
First you need to remove transmitter whilst in the field on a kill to fit it,unless you have 2 tailmounts. Also fiddley to get on and off compared to the dpc version.
Second, with that type of clip - it doesn't allow the tail guard to move whilst on the hawk. They tend to damage the outer 2 feathers on the tail.
Used my type (not my design, someone showed it to me) never had a broken or damaged feather whilst using it. Piece of p*** to put on and off.
This is not slagging your product off, just my experiences with the falconry originals design - which is the same but uses a different material.

Got mine from Westweald real cheap, cut the metal spring that fits in tail mount off, then cut a longish slit in it. Glued a strip of thin strong material (off old waterproof coat) over slit and cut thro so it was reinforced. Got a large size which closes with velcro and just cut it to length I wanted. Whole thing just pops over the transmitter and is held on by bell. use it on a kill in brambles etc on the Harris. Probably what you are all describing above...admit didnt go look!!!
