Brian these are sh*&e , they are NOT Stainless steel , despite some ebay sellers claims . Theye are cast and unfortunately this has been an accident waitning to happen, just very bad luck it was you.
I have to admit to selling these swivels, but, I ALWAYS add a codicil stating that these are NOT for tethering, but just as an emergency swivel if you find you self somehwere and your without a swivel these will suffice but once you have the hawk home safely throw the swivel away. Unfortunately there are less scrupulous sellers of these about. Sadly I have also tried to sell my top quality stainless steel swivels on ebay and there is little or no intersest , even trying to sell them at cost price to me!
at the end of the day is your hawk worth a tenner?

ok ok ive phucked up
I reckon you've learned a hard lesson there Brian and what I am about to say is not getting at you but trying to get others to learn something from your mistake.
What worries me about a lot of the questions on the forum is that an awful lot of them are answered in all the decent books available as are warnings about using the right swivels.
It really does suggest that a lot of people don't get or don't read the books and that is scary.
Nick Fox - Understanding the bird of prey covers most things including swivels - it shows a picture of ones like Brians and says don't use them.
Anybody who has got or is thinking about getting a bird should have read at least three of the good books on falconry (three times). Don't think asking questions on the forum is a substitute, it's an extra.
Hope your bird is ok and you get her back soon Brian.

I have some that are for "transport use only" if someone turned up to buy a youngster and had forgotten to bring one(just so that there was some control when getting them out of the box at home)
if you have any left brian, chuck em in the bin

Brian well done and thank you for posting this topic you did not have to and it took great courage in doing so.
As you say you thought you were purchasing a item fit for the job and sadly it wasn't.
Ebay is like any other shop and not always for bargains.
Maybe those that knew about these items on Ebay could have posted a warning to fellow members about NOT buying them and the reason why rather than comeing along after the event with unhelpful comments
Please if there are any other items any of you know are well below standard then tell the forum we all look on Ebay for falconry bits I have falconry as one of my favorite searches.
This is what this forum is for to help each other. For each person such as Brian who openly says he has purchased these swivels there are hundreds all with these same swivels in use on their birds they are not as informed as we are now.
Again thank you Brian.

i aquired a swivel like that but decided not to use it as i was suspicious about the quality and strength of it.
of course it was easy or me to condemn it cos its my job to inspect and test stuff like that but on a bigger scale.
here is the type i was gonna use on my imprint swamp dragon http://www.lifting-safety.co.uk/gfx/g42.gif
you can get these with 100tonne breaking load

they are also rounded, think they are marketed as 'budget' swivels on ebay and as such , ive been told that the jesses slide off them too, looking at the design that seems obvious to me. so sorry mate, hope you get her back. :(

maybe we could start a thread about the mistakes we made and learnt from them.
during a storm last year my aviary roof lifted slightly, it was housing a m barn owl, next door with concealed sides was a f HH whose roof was the same, as such the m barn owl managed to fly up and into the F HH's aviary! 4am, i used to start work! went to check the aviaries during the storm and couldnt find the owl, and OMG, there he was on a bow perch in the corner of the HH's aviary! the HH looking very uninterested resting on one of her higher perches! i did that whole cartoon grab thing in slow motion , thusting my hand in her aviary and grabbing the jesses of the barn owl , whipping him out so fast it nearly left his eyes behind! so the HH must have been fed up or the barn owl musnt have tasted nice! lol, needless to say the roofs of the aviaries are now refurbished and seperate.
i've made so many f**k ups i can't remember them all and i would dare say in 20 years time (god willing) i'll be making as manny, when you work this close with wild animals and try and impose human will, things will go tits up at some point regardless of who you think you are, thats why we do it.......cos we never know whats next.
