I've seen people use equipment that you just know is **** and will fail in the future. I can't understand how people can spend hundreds of pounds or even thousands of pounds and then use poor quality (usually cheap) equipment. Do yourself a favour buy, make or obtain a quality swivel , anklet and jess leather, leash and finally a quality perching system. If your equipment fails you've only yourself to blame.

Goldie,
Some people can't even be ar**d to change the anklets once the new season starts and same goes for mews jesses, so even checking equipment is too hard for these type of "falconers". For some people the loss of their hawk is the start of the learning process - rather than reading a book or asking the right questions before obtaining the bird.

This is a general statement and not aim at anyone on the list.

The only thing I don't change at the start of every season is the ring on its leg

Money saved on substandard, cheap equipment is not money saved, its money wasted.
Time saved by not maintaining, checking or replacing tired, faulty equipment is not time saved, its time wasted.
Two points, easily learned.
More often than not at a very high price.

Well done for getting your hawk back mate. I lost mine twice, through stupidity on the first occassion and lack of understanding on the second. Duff equipment happens all the time, Jesus ask those fellas up mount Everest when something goes wrong. I bet you wont be doing that again mate!!!

BrianM,
Never met you or seen your hawks, so can't comment. Your broken swivel brought the subject up - just high lighting the fact some people don't check or change their equipment enough. How many times have you heard of people losing hawks/falcons whilst blocked out and then see that the jesses or anklets are cracking with age and have never been greased from day 1.

also, ppl should grease the jesses reguly, even for just the comfort of the bird. I got 3 pairs of jesses that I swap and change, clean and oil every 3days or so. More than often every 2 days. No bird likes the anklets half way up the leg as the jess is too stiff and manky.

Thing is though BrianM didn't have a problem with his jesses, it was with the swivel.

Hi kev, problem is ther are NOT STAINLESS STEEL! despite some folk whom are selling them on ebay claiming to the contrary.. these are cheap nasty cast swivels and WILL break without warning as did happen with Brian's . I f you are using these to tether your hawk, do yourself a favour and get a proper stainless steel swivel from one of the better known suppliers such as Martin Jones,Ben Long, falconry originals, Wesweald ( or myself  ) to name a few. before this happens to you
You are right S Jay, someone try ed to give me acouple of the swivels off eBay like the one that broke. They found a home in the trash and will stay there  I make most of my equipment and a friend that has been doing it for years and used to sell equipment makes me the swivels then at least i know its going to be good and last.

I am sure there are metallurgists on the forum who can/ will correct my efforts, but this was partly my reason for posting which went wrong last month, about swivels. In my experience Stainless steel ( or titanium) cannot be cast, at least not for our swivels. they have to be machined & as such the will have some braising/ welding/ soldering as they will have been from at least 3 component parts( more in the case of sampo swivels) Stainless steel when polished has a slightly blue tinge and also is not magnetic. Please help me out here guys, esp those like Rob redtail? i know what is a good swivel and bad one , but trying to explain without really having the know how is like the blind leading the blind!

like Brian, i had a swivel break on me......but didn't loose my hawk lucky enough...
and that was a martin jones's stainless swivel... i still use a martin jones's cos they are excellent swivels..... i have also used sampo's and have never had any problems with them ever and they were a quarter of the price...
sometimes its just "unlucky"......... but cutting to many corners in key areas it wont just be unlucky when some thing goes wrong, it will be inevitable.

Hi Kev, that's strange so did I , or at least crack on me , & Luckily I spotted it before it btroke completely as it hwas being used at the time for a persistent bating F Gos at the time,. The big thing again about proper stainless steel swivels are that being machined/ wleded etc as opposed to cast , the chances are you will see wear/ crakcs etc beofre the swive finally breaks IMHO
