Hi everybody,
This is just to say that me and my wife are now up and flying.
First aviary and workroom are finished and the wife has got a male Harris.
She free flew him last Sunday for the first time.
The second aviary is in the process of being built and I get my female Harris in 13 weeks time.
Hope to speak to you guys later and any information to help us along would be great

Well done Chunty and wife! Best of luck on getting your bird entered too.
How come you are up and flying when the rest of us are waiting for our birds to moult and the young of the year are just fluffy chicks or still hatching?

We flew free after seven days but he had already had some training.
We were nervous but we let him go and walked around 30 yards and as soon as we raised the glove and called him he was on his way

We want to get a few more free flights under our belt.
Is there any problems with flying during the moult?

its not a good idea, they need to be higher in weight to grow their new feathers, and any sudden stress etc can leave fret marks on the new feathers. of course theres always the chance of breaking blood feathers and thus you have a bleeding hawk.
Most of this i only learnt recently, i think there may be a few threads on it...i may have made one.
how far into the moult is your wifes bird? how old is he and where did you get him?

i would keep it very brief, try and get him in the aviary for breeding by the end of the month.
there is a thread on how to avoid losing your bird. ewill see if i can find it for you, its so easy to lose one in the summer months
