Good article, are you still flying the bird? in the article you said that flying an Imprint was not for you and you probably wouldn't do it again, I found that flying my Imprint started to get a bit of a chore rather than pleasure, in the end his noise got a bit to much and I sold him after 3 seasons, probably my fault, being my first imprint gos, and at that time I didn't have so much feathered game to keep him killing on a regular basis, I am now after a finnish male P/R Gos for this year.

That shot against the fence looks cool, how did that happen? The one in the deep pine forest makes it look like that Gos can surley move between very tight spaces. I love to hear about those kills OF, they must have been spectacular. :) :) :)

No I sold him back to Mick in January. He was my first attempt at an imprint and by Christmas felt burnt out flying him. Not having done one before or having someone local to provide first hand information it was more time consuming than ever before, it got to a stage where I felt I had to fly him rather than wanting to fly him (If you know what I mean). I made a couple of mistakes whilst flying him but have now learned from the experience.
When I wrote the article I was still "recovering" from the season and stated I wouldn't do one again but now time has passed and you can look back at what he achieved and in what style you begin to make plans to do another but doing it slightly different this time. It won't be this season though, I don't have the time or the wife's patience to try one again so soon. Probably try again next season just feeling a bit "gossed out" at the moment and need a season off to recharge.

Oi you skipped me ya ******, give us a taste of the article you wrote about 'Gossing out'. How did that hawk end up so thick inthat pine mate. It must have really been on the afterburners eh! That Pheasant must have been hit hard in the air and taken down onto the fence pretty quickly. Superb flight I bet! I'd love to fly a Goshawk. A bit more experience yet though.

BenC,
The hen pheasant was the better of the two - I'd walked up a hill and my pointer was working the left hand side of a field, whilst a friend was covering the r/h side with a springer. This field was bare of cover (sheep grazing) except for a very small patch of nettles on the r/h side. It was my slip, the spaniel bumped the pheasant up and the gos left the fist in an instant flying slightly downhill towards it. The pheasant was attempting to make it to the conifer plantation, which was approx 300 yards away. The gos closed the gap down and attempted to bind from underneath but missed, righted itself and attempted to bind again but failed. The 2 of them entered the conifer plantation at nearly the same time, gos about 10 foot behind. Out comes the telemetry and picked him up in the middle of it, no standing room - had to crawl in on hands and knees.
The cock flight was a direct flight with the pheasant rising on the opposite side of the river, both gos and pheasant disappeared over the hill. Telemetry track later found him in this position - you guess is a good as mine.

Fair play Jim, I had started to feel just the same about my Gos, the flying was superb and his character was great, but like you it was my first imprint and I obviously made mistakes, I would probably do another one when I retire or can dedicate the first 6 months to being with the bird constantly.

Ha....excellent my man. It is only a slight degree of seperation, but that ability just to get the game higher is what does it. Other than that it more or less a blue print of a harris....killing in cover and all that....:) :) :)
OutFlying
20-05-2005, 07:55 PM
BenC,
It was nothing like a harris flight , the distance of the slip was probably 25-30 yard start. He flew many down on the flat, even taking wood pigeon in flight from the fist - not a tree.
In the last 3 seasons probably taken close to 200 pheasants not one has been taken from a tree.
Once you've seen a good gos ( a normal and the only one to own) flying a gamebird down using pure speed then a similar type flight with even the best harris in the land - however fit - does not compare.

Hehehehheheheheheheh......just giving you a nip mate!! Nah of course I would never think that killing in cover would in ANY way be like a Harris. MY god, far too much nobility in the old Gos eh!
3 season = 200 pheasants good going. Now how many were taken in mid air, as opossed to cover?
Now OF I am just having a bit of fun mate, so feel free to shoot me down mate. :) :) :)

Ben,
It all depends on how you want to mid air them, I fly over a pointer (all flights from the fist) and choose to walk back from the point to allow a fair distance for the slip - to improve (in my eyes) the quality, intensity and length of the flight. If I stood closer there would be nearly all mid airs but they would be muggings.
Most flights (hilly terrain) go out of sight and need telemetry to track them down, so to determine how many where taken in mid air is difficult to judge but when you enter a massive field with no cover and your gos is plucking away - did it mid air it or did the pheasant just give up and land (the choice is yours).
Last season his mid airs takes consisted of 5 wood pigeons, 1 lark, 1 pipit, approx 10 grey partridge, 4 magpies, 2 crows, 6 or 7 pheasants. These are confirmed sightings and as I said many end results are not seen. Probably quite a few more but if I don't see it I can't count it. I wouldn't count a flight from a reflush as a mid air take.

AHHHHH, we've been shot,,,,,,,coming in bravo two one zero....ahhh...looks like a stern hit........bail out, bail out.
Seriously though, tell me more about the lark, pipit, magpie, crow and partridge. Were these set up by your pointer or were they caught in a 'fair' flight. What do you consider a fair mid-flight flight. Are you seeing a pigeon in flight and then slipping, or are you considering the pigeon, the wind, the height and all the other stuff. I ask these questions SERIOUSLY, not as a comparison between harris and gos etc etc etc but as someone who is interested.
Thanks

Outflying, Nice looking bird what`s his weight ? imprint or P/R ?
Ben, Example of good mid air flight, Two crows about 30 yards into a very large field, gos takes them on out of car window, pull car over and get out to see gos climbing behind the two crows now about 100 ft the gos is rapidly gaining then a 20 - 30 second dog fight with both crows to catch one diving for cover at about 40`
You ever seen gosses fly ben ?

He was an imprint, best weight around 2-1 but got a bit carried away and flew him as high as 2-3. Killled at this weight but problems developed from it.

After a bit you get any pictures you want, if your dog is steady enough. The pheasant shot was taken by a friend and when early on in the gosses career, that's why the slip was so close.

doesn't get fed to the hawk.

If you fly any kind of hawk/falcon there is a high chance of some sort of accident. But gosses are more prone due to the type of flights involved - low level pursuits in cover at speed.
Ben C
21-05-2005, 07:12 PM
But it being ineviatable is a bit heavy. Christ they cost what? £1500, and every trip out after manning you hold your breath waiting for it to shuffle of this mortal coil?
Don't get me wrong I love em but not at that cost!

BB, if your willing to kill game and fly enough - its a certain thing that at sometime your gos will kill itself somehow.
I quite agree OutFlying.
Its a trade off isnt it, Sport Vs Risk.
You cant have a consistently high level of the former without some element of the latter creeping in.
will kill itself somehow

BenC,
Maybe certain is too strong more like a very high chance. Probably in a season I'll slip him 250-300 times or maybe more than times that by how many seasons he lives and then the chances of an accident start to become high.

Wait until one has exploded from your fist to give chase to a cock pheasant Benc.
Its worth every penny.
Half the fun of flying an accipiter is that every other day has the capacity to become a "brown trouser affair" without any warning at all 8)
Ben C
21-05-2005, 07:22 PM
I've also seen it, but not with the devastation unfortunately described above. Twice Cody has 'bumped' into fences. And we had to go home on both occassions, touch and go for 24hours, but I am not sure I am resigned to the fact. F**K I would be absolutely devastated.
A funny story in retrospect: Lucy and I were on our first 'hawk' experience and our mentor let a beautiful buzzard called 'Buzzby' take flight. He landed on a elecrical pole and went POP! We had been there about 3 minutes!! A lesson we learn't (he recovered by the way and is still going strong)

BB,
If you want the best flights then you have to take the good with the bad. I lost 2 gosses in 4 seasons, the wife was going mad about the costs.
As they say "no such thing as a free lunch"
When the gos hit the fence and died, I had to think long and hard before deciding to fly one again but you look at the sport you've had and do it all again.
Ben C
21-05-2005, 07:40 PM
I'll tell you what it is.......You never, and I mean NEVER here of these costs when starting out. On the page of whatever book you read there is never a fully realised description of what is being said here. And your hawk walks never even cover such stuff (bad for business I suppose)
I fully understand what you mean, and I have had me own 'brown trouser' moments....I have a f**cking nature reserve across the road for christsake.
But the brutal facts that OF is quite rightly describing are a modest revelation. And hard ones at that.

If sh*t can happen - it will. I know one of your gosses on loan got kicked in the eye with a cock pheasant spur - blinded in one eye in a instant.
If you can't bare to lose your hawk - then don't fly it, is my advice. It not a case of if it will happen more a case of when it will happen. Providing of course they leave the mews often enough.

WW,
I just found the last entry in his hunting journal (novenber 2003) after he hit the fence-
I've just finished writing up his journal, in his season and a half he took 165
head comprising of 129 pheasants, 7 partridge, 7 mallard, 2 teal, 3 rooks and 17
various including rabbits, squirrel, moorhen etc. The enjoyment and sport I had
with this bird will take some beating, now putting it behind me and looking
forward to flying another finnish male next season and hopefully to the same
standard.
Yours Jim.

Jim, Will you go back to Parent reared gosses or will you give the imprint route another go?
OutFlying
10-06-2005, 06:08 PM
It all depends on time available, if time is not an issue I will imprint again - if time is short I'll fly a parent reared gos.

so close to the hawk and he still is feeding on the crow, its moments like these that make the time you put into a social imprint seem worth it.

Yesterday we went out with 7 gosses (5 brown birds) in Holland on the Royal The Hague Golf and Country Club to help them with the rabbit problem :D
Beautifull day, very difficult to fly and also ferreting was hard.
Made 2 pics of the gos of my friend Adriaan.
His German female, swapped beginning this year from previous owner Rickgos, weighted 940 grams and turned out to be a silent, very aggressive hunter.
Yesterday she even went on a fox, no doubt she hestitated and she hit it hard and nailed it!
Fortunately she had to loose beacuse of bushes, but the bird is a mad hunter, for sure.

Ms Havoc is just two thirds her age at 14 years old. It's fascinating having them so old and still hunting. And Ms Havoc makes babies every year also!

Cheers Johny, flying him at work so most of the time there is a flight. The times when he has been up for gulls they have made it over water, but not this one. Also there wasn't a breath of wind, good for slips at gulls with a Gos.

Ross,
Tasha has a 1Dm2 and I have a 40D, I rarely get to touch the 1D:roll:
Tasha uses a 100-400L and I have a 70-200L all Canon.
We also have a 20d as a backup. Tasha wants to get a 400 f5.6 prime next...when we can afford it...
I have not been called a lad for a long time....most of the time it is old fart of just a-hole.....So thanks....LOL
