I have a question for all you hood makers. What stitch do you use to sew your hoods together and why do you use that particular stitch? OK, its two questions..LOL

Reinforced cross stitch - I find it gives the best light - tightness and pulls the hood together well. Any other stitch I have used tends to leak light and you have to cover the seams with strips of leather which I don't like to do.

Thanks......:supz:
I have quite using the cross stitch in favor of the line, or running stitch. The line stitch can be used outside or inside to where the cross is ugly on the outside.
When running my stitches I use double needles. I grind the points round so that they will follow the awl holes well and I can pull them super tight without them pulling out of the leather. This way I can get closer to the edge. Cross stitching pulls through to easily.
I have a bud that makes his hoods using dry bond glue and you can not even find the seams.

On swen dutch hoods I use a tiger tooth with beeswax on the first pass and then go back for a second pass (Waxed again) to fill in the gaps and remove any twist that the tight sinches on the first pass have put into the body of the hood.

Bill when I used to make them, I used a standard saddlers double handed stitch, but crossed the thread over and also locked each stitch off as you can hopefully see by this pic hth. does that make snese?

Bill two, one at each end of the thread,, basicly make hole with awl through both pices of leather, pas left needle through both holes, pull with right thumb, and 1st wo fingers that ios already holding needle at other end of thread but at different angle when you have pull left needle clear of hole twist your right wrist and pass right needle back through same whole. tie off as you do so , pull deelat clear with left thumb and for finger, cross over neadles to produce cross stitch .. no doubt this is clear as mud but makes snese to me :lol: !
