Just got back from the vet and we are still not really 100% what was the cause of death...................Alan said that the tests done didn't show up anything conclusive and unless I wanted to spend silly money on having samples taken and tested etc. this was about as good as it was going to get!!!
I have been told that if he'd eaten a slug, that would have killed him or most raptors so be warned........................

Sort of the worst news really as you are no wiser? I have seenmany bird eat slugs and have been fine BTW, but then I have also seen many eat jesses and are always 100%. Unfortunately there is always the exception to the normal, as Hazel found out after her HH ate his and died of a heart attack.

I asked if there was any way I could have prevented what happened and he said definately not!

I can chuckle about it now but he basically said, "he was perfectly healthy apart from the fact that he was dead!!!!!"

At least it doesn't appear to be anything contagious. Small mercies I know.

Sorry to hear about your loss - heard about it yesterday.

If your with Golden Valley you should get paid - paid out on one of my birds within the 5 days value of bird + Vets bills, and as paperwork and ring numbers did'nt tally up with the Insurnace details they could have easily squirmed out of that one.

Heard bad stuff about other Insurance Companies though.......

perfectly healthy apart from being dead.. at least he had a sense of humour albeit a naughty one..

Hi SS,

It is dissapointing to receive the results and still not really know. But one thing is for sure that you could not have done anything, loco was well looked after and it is just one of those things that happens. unfortunately it happened to loco. Thank you for sharing the results though.

the worst news is no news.......i know you can look at it anyway you want and it DOES sound harse, but i have always been of the attitude "if you have livestock, you have deadstock".....main thing is you have other birds C that you can consentrate on. Hope Danni is OK I know when our Pere/Barbary keeled over dead on Carols fist she cried for days from the shock.

PS the pm we had doen on that was only a fraction of the cost of the one you had done?! believe it or nor £12 was the cost and the results proved cuase of death.

What was it WW?

I had a bird keel over on me once, turned out to be lead poisoning. Worst was it belonged to Dave Newby.

she had a "hardening of the arteries". apparently not uncommon but unusual in a young bird. Coupled with this was some intermal trauma from an impact. I subsequently learned from the guy i bought her of she had pitched into his pointer a week or so before. But that a diff story.

I think the point here is somtimes a PM can provide the info sometimes not. It is i believe NOW tho a requirement of the insurance dependanton the company.

oops sorry of course never thought of that cause i know he had one on i've seen the bird.....DOOOOHHHH

He actually had 2 rings on, 1 closed DEFRA ring and an IBR ring. I had to cut off all his equipment there and then as I didn't want to have to do it later and go through all the upset again. It was one of the hardest things I had to do. Danni couldn't bare to hold him while it was done so Snudz helped. Thanks again mate.

Saker...are you in a biult up area...lots of people with a view onto your mews.Or maybe someone with an allotment or veggies in t garden.A m8 o mine had a pet crow, wich died suddenly. It had munched a snail or slug that had been dying from slug pellet poisoning.

Saker-Clive
22-05-2005, 10:24 AM
The pm would've shown up any poisoning.

Mikey
22-05-2005, 10:44 AM
I'm sure it would! It's just i dont see a note for any test for poisons or chemicals on any of the paperwork!? Forgive me..i'm an untrusting soul,my m8's crow was poisoned on purpose by a low life neighbour, and as i said,i cant see any notes to say that sort of test was carried out

dont pull you self to bits over it tho as most if not all of us has lost a bird . we lost another little male kestrel a few years ago in much the same way but that was down to a massive error on our part in turms of weight controll and a late feed .
