Here are some of the images I took from the two days that I attended.
I hope some people can add to these for the enjoyment of others
on the forum. I and Dave Scott travelled up in the morning of the 3rd day to join the
members of Brian Birds group nr Mere. The ground was first class and
very cold!! so much so Dave had trouble getting the blocks he had brought
into the ground!! the weather am was fantastic although we suffered later
with freezing fog coming in.

Here are some more of Floyd my charge at the mo. The Hoar frost was spectacular.
The Party was all on foot apart from I and Dave in his Landy as we had all the
Paintings for the Auction in the back so for security we were able to drive. It worked out
well though on the first flight of the day as when we were sent to block off the end
of one of the strips we found a group of pheasants out on the stubble in a prime
set up. Bob Wollstonecroft ( not sure of the spelling bob so if wrong I apologize)
put up his Gyr x Peregrine and we got a good flight and kill to start the day.

Here are some more. Is there anyone out there who took some
other than me???

These three are when Dave Scott flew his second Pere x Saker . The first stoop was
awsome but nearly ended in disaster near a fence . Some of us thought the
partridge had hit the wire and killed itself but when someone went to check
the partridge had gone. The Falcon then remounted to a lovely pitch which she does
at home every day then the fog came in underneath her obscuring her from us I continued
to track her using the Telemetry which told us she was over head still ! We kept shouting
which probably kept her from drifting off. She came back in to a pheasant body when
the mist moved off. Very lucky not to have lost her in that!!!

Looks brilliant ground and conditions!

unfortunately it wasn't, my first setup (picture 1 where the cars are standing in that pic there was about 10 redlegs in the right hedge) you can see was the best of the day I went over far to the right with the bird overhead and then the spectators moved towards me and flushed the partridges in my direction, the tiercel hit it 5 yards in front of me :supz: (if you didn't know thats me in the second pic)
best flight for watching ever. What you can't see to the left of the game strip was fencing and a couple hundreds yards to the right there were fences everywhere running along and across fields. Ken Mc Dougals falcon missed the fence by an inch!!! That same day on another venue a spanish falcon destroyed its transmitter on the fence! So not all spots were good for flying any bird, I wouldn't have flown my gos in some of the places.

I noticed that these pheasants at the venue were all of Michigan Blue Back origin
or have alot of american line in them . They are good flyers apparently although
I have heard they stray quite a way's from there release ground. Some
keepers don't like them as they are always straying and have to be dogged in
continually. Handsome Pheasants though.

Alan, the kit I'm using is a Canon 1D MKIII and a 100-400 IS lens.
not all came out good and this camera is only a month old so I'm
still getting to grips with it but its focusing ability is amazing when
it does lock on.

Robert Bagley (marshall radio) and Steve Chingren (house of grouse) both have some pictures of the meet that I'll add when they get back from a trip to Argentina looking at Cassini Peregrines. They went on from the BFC meet onto Argentina. I didn't take any pictures as I was flying. The meet was great, a very high standard, but there were hazards. My bird hit a fence as did a very experienced and well known tircel that died as well as a result of a wired fence. Great doo, most of the ego's were left at home the only issue was £3.80 a pint, i nearly died of shock...

It was great to see Robert and Steve and his lovely wife Julie. I travelled with
steve grouse hawking in wyoming for quite a few weeks back in the early
nineties, Was lucky enough to see Jomo at his peek I think. Its staggering to think
this tiercel is still taking sage grouse at 21 seasons old!!!!

I intend to go out again when I get a little more free time. Its a stunning place as you
know.

Thanks again steve for your winning bid. Will be in touch.

Chris

Dean, pics lie in this case, look at the first 2 pictures, especially the first one it looks as if the cars were miles away, yet it might be less than 200yds. In the second pic the game cover crop is across a valley with barbed wire running along the bottom and a telegraph wire running parallele to the cover crop. Also you have to think pheasant or partridge, a duck especially a mallard once out of water will either try to make it back or make a clean break thus climbing out of potential danger for the falcon like barbed wire or the telegraph wires which I think can even be more dangerous to a falcon, look at this pic, its my old tiercel barbary a year after hitting a telegraph wire:

Hi Andy. Great photos! It was good to see you & Scotty there. This was the first BIG field meet I have ever attended. I was very nervous with the prospect of flying my (not so high mounting) tiercel in the company of the well known falconers there. I should not have worried, the comraderie and support from all was great (& my tiercel managed to kill a partridge). Wonderful ground, great company & I witnessed some top class sport. I hope that there is another spring meet next year.

HI Tony , It was great seeing you there as well, and I now know the man to take
to the restaurant if you want to get superb service!!

Tony these things can be very intimidating with the big names flying top class
falcons with huge reputations but none of that really matters at the end of the
day. Its about meeting people who love what you love and enjoying being out there.

Ego's do get inflated and bruised on these occasions but what it really all is
about is the birds.I would love to have a super high mounting falcon as much as
the next guy but we have all different circumstances, time and experience.
the one thing you can take from these gatherings is new friends and possibly
learning something different about the art. There are some truly talented falconers
out there and being able to enjoy the field with some is a hell of an opportunity

it was great to see you and your lovely wife.

see you soon Andy

Tony, thanks for the info. I heard all the time how good the Spanish falconers
birds performed and was disappointed not to have been able to see them fly.

By the way, you, Nick, Jacqui and the rest of the organizing committee need congratulating
too as I know Steve could never have pulled it off without all your help. And also
the elected field masters for all the groups. Well done to you all.

But Lets hope the powers at be can organize another end of season meet like this
cos If they do I am sure it will be even more well attended.

Dear Brian,

you were there in spirit at least. Just before Matt Gage flew his wonderful little falcon on the last day, I asked an american friend if he knew you --- and he spoke very highly of you:yawinkle:.

This meeting won't be repeated in the near future, but next year, all being well, should see a repeat of our biggest field meeting at Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire. It's earlier in the season (first half of october), but it's a fantastic event held every four years, over four days. If you get the chance to come it's worth the effort.

Best wishes,

Tony.

That.s a great picture of a real gentleman and a great host on the day. He not only welcomed us on his land - but welcomed us into his home to see his George E. lodge paintings too. How can we ensure he gets a copy of this photo of him with a falcon on hi fist - I am certain he will appreciate it?

Would you like to tell everyone Tony why it wont be repeated:?::goodman:
And also can you explain why the BFC insists on holding Woodhall Spa so early in the season(October). Its a known fact that the majority of landowners who make this event possible would prefer the meeting to be held at the back end of the year:?:

Phil, what Tony was saying is that this type of event wont be repeated in the near future due to the fact that about 2 years have passed from inception to the event taking place, its not just a case of find some land, find a venue and then publisise it to pull something like this off.
As for Woodhall, why ask Tony, he is only the tresurer, your question should be asked to the director or better still the Woodhall organising committee.

Well Graham I'm not trying to be argumentative, I find it a bit puzzling by Tony's statement prior, that there will not be another meet of this scale in the near future after Norton Park being a fantastic success.
Tony has put himself forward on here as BFC spokesman to answer all queries and questions concerning BFC policies and events of this magnitude. Don't forget Graham not only did Steve Williams near enough pull off the Norton Park BFC international meeting single handily but also a fantastic auction:D. Another reason I ask Tony because he is Treasurer for the club, he single handily knows what can be spent on events like Woodhall etc and what can not be spent cause he holds the 'coffers'

As for Woodhall I think holding it later in the season we would see better sport(ie fitter Falcons and Hawks being flown but also fitter and older game being flown), more land would be made available to the club(meaning more members will be able to attend with more venues being made available) after all the major shoots would been and gone and more stable weather patterns later in the season.
I think even Alan Sugar and Alvin Jones would agree with me on these subjects:?::mrgreen:

Hi Phil,

I'm pleased you're not trying to be argumentative, as that would spoil a nice thread and get in the way of your undoubted appreciation for those who did the work that made this meeting such a pleasure (and if you think Steve pulled this off single handed, you're very mistaken). The work associated with the meeting is far from finished at the moment, and much as we would all like to think it could happen again, it certainly won't be next year. Fingers crossed that we might be able to organise the event at some future date, but for now let's appreciate what has just been.

Woodhall Spa. Since 1969 held early in the season, and very lucky we are to be welcomed back by something like 70 landowners for what is undoubtedly the most eagerly awaited meeting in our calendar. We are also extremely lucky to have such a selfless team of individuals to co-ordinate the whole thing.
Every 4 years, I and all other BFC members are lucky enough to be invited to attend, and we have the opportunity to accept that invitation or not.

Tony.

PS. Phil, the views I express on this Forum are mine and mine alone. I don't, and can't speak for the club.
