View Full Version : IFF Gamehawking meet?

CloudBase1664

might be due to the fact that most people posting on this subject have met now personally, what a pity that not all IFF members were there

Just dipping a toe in the water for now but I wonder who would be interested in a three day longwing fieldmeet for IFF members in Lincolnshire next season?
It would be for groups of no more than 4 falconers flying wild hatched game .

Dave

This is the sort of ground we'd be flying over.

This is my favourite ground. My old tiercel Mike had half a dozen wonderful flights at greys and hen pheasants here over the years and is buried under the last tree near a badger's set. This patch belongs to the same farm as the last pic and consists of 2500acres of winter wheat and rape. I.ve sounded out
Matt King and being the top bloke he is I think a few days on his patch will probably be forth coming .If a few more step forward with offers of ground I;m sure we could get it on.

Of course Alistair it would be lovely to see you again.
I think i would go for December before the greys pair up.

There is no point taking names now although it is nice to know who's interested I will rustle up what ground I can over the summer and in September I will post some rules/guidelines If you think you can live with these and have a hawk thats going OK I will need to know what hawk you are flying what dog, if any, you have and if you drive a 4WD.i will also look into overnight accomodation but I shall try to keep it cheap (for the Scots and the Yorkshire lads:D)

Hi Dean
I am hoping to go for quality so I am hoping to keep the fields as small as possible depending really on what sort of year our gamebirds have had.Anyone interested will have to be members of the IFF and if not a member of the BFC I may ask for a reference from someone who is .I'm sorry if this sounds elitist but I dont want some numpty turning up and ruinning everyones day. I have also got to consider those who put up ground and try as far as possible to safeguard their interests.

there were some exceptions of the rule, but having had the opportunity to be with several falcons every day just opens a very narrow window of judgement, my own birds flew good on the first 2 days, fog on the 3rd day and performance was poor to average on the 4th  tiercel mounting exactly 350ft (rangefinder measured) and female less than that. What should be taken into consideration also is the age of the individual bird and the sex and species. Rob Woolstencroft female gyr x shaheen is a big bird and for such a big bird it appeared pretty small in the sky, don't know about exact height but it was sure high enough for a good (several seconds) teardrop stoop. Best performance that I have seen at the meet was Matt Gages female peregrine climbing in very tight circles slightly upwind to more than 800ft (rangefinder measured, too) and killing a redleg in the stoop. But there were many more falcons performing very good, too many to remember all the names...

Hi Bjorn (Bjork:lol:), only joking.

you're spot on there, in fact I'd go further than that with most landowners (or any other spectator come to that) who know little about what we do --- I suspect they find the best flights quite boring compared to the lesser ones.

I didn't get to see Bob fly at Norton Park, but he's flown impressive hawks whenever I've seen him down the years.

I've got no complaints about anyone being presented with a token of appreciation for the sport they have shown, but in truth I would have liked to see it presented to an overseas visitor, as an acknowledgement to the extra effort required of them (you).

Best wishes,

Tony.

I fly a male goshawk, too if you didn't know and most landowners find it more interesting to go out with the gos (especially hunting corvids, they scream so nicely) than with the falcon, I had comments like: "why does it go all the way up there, the partridge are down here?!" and not only one time, but as you said I would have like to see some sort of souvenir to Lorenzo and Santos presented, as they had made the largest journey and had both a team of 3 superbly trained falcons with them, not an easy target to achieve. For me it was only 8hrs drive, so don't count me into that

First off Alistair I am not into trophies either and they have no meaning for me at all. However if the Trophy is for best Laugh or most entertaining Falconer over the weekend then go for it as I know Dean has cleared a space for it on his mantelpiece as he is bound to win it.

Dave I am up for it but don't expect too much from my team as we will not be able to train in September (do I get the Trophy for best excuse ) I will come to your place if there is room and hope to give a fair account of myself and my Game Hawks then I have to train my Goldies for the Euro Meets as Scotland is finished and so are the Blue Hares nothing left for us to Hunt.
I will be in Linc's on the 6th, 7th and 8th of February to hunt Brown Hares this time I hope I am lucky :)

I know I,d win it if I was in the hat,but I aint gonna creep up no BFC members back passage just to get there!!Unless of course shes 25,size 10 with pert breasts!:supz:

The last time I saw Terry he didn't look anything like that, but the wonders of modern medicine and palstic surgery may well have changed all that.

Just dipping a toe in the water for now but I wonder who would be interested in a three day longwing fieldmeet for IFF members in Lincolnshire next season?
It would be for groups of no more than 4 falconers flying wild hatched game .

Dave

This is the sort of ground we'd be flying over.Know the ground very well as do my hawks and thanks for the day's out this season....count me in Dave.

Dave

Hi Dave,

it was only after speaking with you that I realised I'd missed the last sentence.
Of course I can offer a day.

Best wishes,

Tony.

If my Tiercel is still flying like he did this season I'd be more than
interested.
Besides he still needs to kill one of your Greys. ;)

Hi Matt
Yep I'm up for organising something later in the season .I've got at least a dozen top venues promised but I don't want to start dotting the i's and crossing the 't's until early October when we know what sort of season we've got ahead of us regarding quarry .and the hawks should be getting into their stride .I'm not trying to teach anyone to suck eggs here but there are a few things to discuss before then .I will need to call in a few favours to make this work and we need to be sure people who put thems selves up do infact turn up and with hawks that can do us justice. They also have to be aware of field etiquette and how it works .ie I have the best set ups:lol:and also a certain standard of dress .I dont mean you have to turn up looking like a victorian gamekeeper but just take Norton Park as a guideline.
It would be useful to get some idea of numbers but"I want to come!!"aint enough we will need to know ,what hawk .what quarry, what dog if any and if you have a 4 WD. It will mostly be spotting but if there's not to much pressure numbers wise I can arrange a couple of venues where we can fly over pointers at phessies out of sugar beat .I respect some prefere this to spotting .
I like to make clear this is for traditional lowland gamehawking at mostly partridge 'pheasants and duck with maybe a perlin or two at snipe / LBJ's.Sorry but no one else need apply:lol:

Whats the weather like in the UK at the moment, might be the most important factor for autumn prospects as most partridge chicks should be hatching these days.

So maybe we can have a US side version of this--an IFF America Gamehawking Extravaganza. We can meet at Farson Wyoming in late september or early October when the ducks are in and the grouse are thick as flees. camp at my old spot on the Little Sandy river where you can catch some BIG trout with a fly rod or whatever you have. howbout it?

I shall be discussing it with Matt King sometime within the next few weeks .I'm sure we will put something on later in the season but I'm not sure what format it will take yet.I have been let down in the past with people off the list not turnng up and want to be certain this will not happen again. As things stand I would like to do a couple of days in the last week of the season .I have no shortage of venues pledged I just hope we can do them justice:lol:
