I recieved an email this morning about a new type of bewit that has been developed by Falocners Emporium and thought every1 else might be interested to see it.

<Quote>These bewits are our newest innovation and are used in the same way as leather bewits , except for the fact that they are tied off at
the finish with a cable tie ( follow this link for stage by stage
instructions). Unlike leather you hawk will not easily peck these off.
This pair are designed for Male and Female harris Hawks, Goshawks or
Peregrines ( ie either V or W rings), but can be for any size hawk.<Quote>

I am being serious now....has anyone thought of manufacturing a goretex coat (for a hawk before I get any smart arse answers) for rainy conditions? A bit like the silver blankets you get when they throw themselves into lakes.

Would the hawk not get wet whilst flying in this rain ? or if it missed and hit the deck. Bit of a problem for the quick slip.

If it raining why not use a small umbrella if the winds not too bad. Or fly a species with better weather proofing i.e native species

Hi Gaz, reason for developing these was I was having peregrines bite though leather bewits( yes even best roo, in a couple of minutes. As for being cheaper than leather , in fact it is more expensive than leather and there is more work involved, and is actually a similar price to the leather ones. However as it should last longer than leather & not go stiff like leather, hopefully these are qualities worth at lest thinking about. At the end of the day, I agree ' if it ain broke, don't fix it but surely should not equipment be constantly evolving for the sake of the hawks welfare as of course the husbandry etc
Just my thoughts, although I am very happy to hear comment to try and improve our products, regards

SJ,
I had a look at the gortex braces on a hood, wrapped it round a pencil and found due the way the brace was made from gortex and the stitching involved it didn't formed as nice as shape as a leather bewit would. Wouldn't use a goretex bewit myself but if your falcons removing a leather bewit easily then a different solution is required.

Hi O F, there are so many different materials that evrey body calls Goretex, , best way I can describe ours is that is is the soft type, very similar to Pineo hood braces if that makes sens

That's the braces I used, due to the stitching it doesn't form the same shape as well as the leather does. It will do the job no doubt but I don't have a problem with leg bells attached with leather but if i did I might try your idea........

Lol, Ben imagine a bird of prey with one of those on, you'd be better off spraying its feathers with a sealing agent of some sort.

Not a good idea can cause the bird to get ill.

SJ Have you tried these on the birds for a period of time to check how abrasive they are? I did testing with silicone heatshrink around a cable tie on a HH with a bell for 2 seasons and the moult with no bad results, but still do not like the look.

Velvet coat made by Johnson's. It is similar to a very fine spray of baby oil.
