Hello,

I would like to know from people flying or having flewn sparrow hawks where they got there equipment from! Not only the jesses and swivel (some small swivel) and bells suppliers, but also where they kept or keep their spars during the days and/or night and what kind of equipment they bought or used for doing so.

I realize this question is very broad but that is what it should be. Pictures of equipment are very welcome. I myself already looked around quite a lot and have some good info i guess already. And vendors for swivels and even for gauntlets (although I would also make some own gauntlet) but wait for posting this info after getting some good advice from you guys.

So don't let me down on this and post as much as info related to falconry equipment and so for sparrowhawk here?

Kind regards,

Wilfred

I also make the equimpment 4 my spars, I never let a passage out in the garden on a perch just take them in a modified hood and take out them 4 flying and after flying I take down 4 an our to the perch to have a bath....I fill the modified hood with sand on the floor to catch the castings and the **** of the bird....if they left on a perch they can easily damage their feathers and in the worst case have a broken leg....loop perches are fine 4 human raised ones coz they are calmer but 4 muskets I advice to use the modified hood technicue :)

hmmmm I PM BB4 some hood patterns :D

best regards,
Dan.

ps: I was used the same bells 4 the spars what I use for a tiercel pere....and have no problems...

Where do you mount your bells on your spars Dude?

Dude

I use a tail bell always as its a place to anchor the tail guard and when flying I mount a neck bell with an elastic band(I think the neck is the safest place to mount any "extras" on a spar

Small swivel I use is a deep sea fishing swivel and works good up to a male HH.

Likewise Goran.
I buy them for £0.20p GBP (0.457640 Canadian dollars) each, I buy a load and drop test them with a 2 lbs weight.
no problems yet :D

That'l do it, although I would have reservations about it as you couldnt help but tower over the bird while its inside the tank.
Probably me just being an overcautious muppet though!!

The clear tank is the best option

That's what I used, formed the circle, drilled and bolted into shape. Just use a towel for the base. But next time might use a 45 drum plastic lid for the base with conifer cuttings in place, but would rear on a small table so the imprint was more off the ground and didn't only ever see a giant or a set of feet

Im a little bit dubious about making mine by just pulling it into a circle and bolting because its 2.3mm thick.
What Im going to do is roll a cylinder from some 3mm steel, roll the polycarbonate up and push it inside this cylinder then put the lot in a low bake oven at 180 degrees for 5 mins, this will stress relieve the polycarb and it will stay cylindrical. I dont think I could rest easy while the bird was in the tank if the polycarb still had stress in it.
In hindsight i suppose it would have been easier to order thinner sheet but then I suppose my tanks will be all the better for it in the long run.

For the base I think I will use one of the plant pot holders I got from B&Q
you cant tell them apart from a purpose bought "bird bath".
Im going to add to it buy welding a polypropelene spigot onto the lip for the cylinder to sit tightly over.

I sometimes wonder why I insist on making things harder for myself but then again I suppose its half the fun :D

I was lucky to have to small children fully test it for me, no problems. Don't know the name of the plastic used (it was a free offcut) but it doesn't shatter or crack when abused. 6 small bolts and washers on either side. Worked well for myself. Yours sounds a better option, are you sure your not making three

Sorry Billy missed that one, Why are you getting jealous?
Reference the recycling bin, i wouldn't use one again, i would go for the see through plastic imrpint tank or make one up myself. But never had any problems with the spar she used to come out in the evenings and play at killing the spaniels tail.

Hi Wilfred,

I have been gradually piecing together bits of kit ready for a Spar next season. Hoping to breed from a pair first, fingers crossed. I get most of my equipment from Martin Jones, he has some nice small swivels. I'm going to use an imprint tank as Outflying has mentioned I cheated and purchased one already made  . I intend to make my own anklets and jesses from some light leather. Perch wise I have been recommended a small bow-perch it seems a safer bet compared with the other types of perches that are available.

Regards to a glove nearly any single thickness glove is all that is required. Bells undecided at present my use some of Andy Peel's ones.

Just uprgraded my scales to some electronic ones been using balance scales with my harris but wanted a set to weigh to the nearest gram. Thanks to the person that recommended them to me

(Nice pics Falcon)

Regards,

HH
