How old is the hawk, what is the history of it, what is it doing now - moulting or being flown and how is it tethered ?

in that case its may just be a reaction to something new.....you can prob try giving her other items to play with and also treat the anklets with the tail bite stuff you can get for kids.

Just a quick note i trust she is not tethered??

Chris I hope your kids don't tail bite, try nail bite instead

thanks guys I thought about nail bite (still thinking about tail bite?)
no she is not tethered but she is sitting on a bow perch and coming to food at a distance of about 6-10 inches at the moment

Bitter aloes. Get it from the chemist.

Or I think I read in "Training the Short-Winged Hawk" an old recipe recommending the gall bladder of chicken. (The green bile it contains is bitter).

Put that on the jesses and she won't pull at them.

can you give tirings to an owl? would it even help to give it a wing etc to relieve boredom?

I like the quick assumption it was a hawk Outflying

I have given kadabra tirings to keep him amused and all he does is fling it around to pounce on it  it keeps him out of mischief i suppose :P Your barn owl will soon get tired of biting the anklets it is just something new as mentioned earlier. I never knew you could put stuff on them to prevent them from biting them though :P but i dont leave any jesses on kadabra as he is a ****** for taking them out.

Jack Merlin has previously suggested english mustard as an alternative to bitter aloes. Have you tried that?

Try using the same stuff that people use to stop children from sucking their thumb.
