Same thing happened with me and a tawny.....I thought it was dead but the bloody thing nailed me good and proper, I bled everywhere....the story will be in Jay Bettesworth's (roasici's) book. What sort of size are they mate? And does anyone have a picture.................BUBO!!

Now be careful lads this might turn into a serious acceptence of owls as a falconry bird if we are not careful.

funny little critters....i remeber a chap that was buying some telemetry of a chap i go hunting with....he came over and tied in the purchess with a days hawking....well my male took a lil owl almost at my side...it was fine but i could,nt release it strait off cos of the harris not being on the fist so i put in my pocket....well all hawks under control, he was "lets have a look " so i took it out of my pocket .....then it was all ahhhhhhhh....put this in to the context that this guy looks like he should be playing for the british lions made for a funny sight....and whe it was releast it was more of the same......tickled me that did

yes they are here and i would not contemplate on getting one to fly if it will be your first owl. they are really small adn things can go really wrong. Great little buddies to have around as they are very playful.

hmmmmmmmmmm i cant believe your last question popped up but as it has i will set things straight OWLS MUST NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER BE KEPT IN CAGES nor any other raptor for that matter no matter how small they are. Harry potter is just fictional and has caused a lot of problems in the owl world. please dont use harry potter as a guide.

i am not keen on keeping owls inside except during extreme weather. Owls are outside birds. it is ok to have an outside aviary with an indoor bit for protection. Barn owls love to hide away and quite frankly kadabra spends more time in his 'barn' as we call it than he does outside but that is his choice, he sets his rump down where ever he pleases. But i would offer all owls an outside avairy. It is not really that healthy to keep them inside as they need the elements to keep their feathers in top condition along with the right diet.

I hope this helps. dont be afraid to ask any question, if you think they are silly just do what i do and pm instead then only one person will think you are silly :P i wont laugh at anyone except benC who just creases me up but i would never laugh or make fun nastily. I will steam up if i read negligence though so keep that in mind hahaha but hopefully you will never put up a post with that content!

thanks alot bubo i appreciate that

i would never keep a bird of prey in a cage, i was always wondering how they can allow that in a movie

and wanted to ask like if someone had to keep it indoors if its ok to, if they had a massive aviary and i agree best left outside anyway

thanks for your reply :)

appreciate it

no worries, unfortunately i know a lot of peeps over here that do not have an aviary and keep barn owls in appartments   as you can imagine we dont get on very well now as they are adoment they are pets. It is only a movie and the shots of the snowy in the cage are only for a few seconds.

Getting back to the original thread, Bubo's right! They're wonderful little birds with personalities vastly bigger than themselves - a lot of "sod you" attitude wrapped up in a cute package. I've always thought that if you crossed a T-Rex with a bumble bee you'd get a little owl :D

I bought my third one yesterday (£100 - three weeks old) as a replacement for a three-year-old that's going into a breeding programme.

Little Owls are great little performers in a show ring and worth more than their weight in gold as fund-raisers - but only if you get them absolutely right. Wieght control is critical but the biggest challenge is keeping them manned & happy. So Bubo's right again, :yawinkle: they absolutely aren't beginners' birds.

Anyway, here's the new baby. His name is Pippin (or Peregrine Took if you're being formal!) and he was three weeks old yesterday!

FYO Litle owls were introduced/ re-introduced by Lord Lilford in the lat e 19th century( one of the patrons of the OHC) this was not 5 miles from where I type this, unfortunately my falonjs have caught bothe thes & kes's while gamehawking

Hi SJ

Yes, he had them brought over from Holland and where I live, lots of people still call them Dutch Owls.

My Harris got one in January. Although it would probably be more accurate to say that the LO got The MHH!

When we got to them, the owl had a firm grip of both anklets and had to be prized off before being released. Can you imagine the conversation when he got home?

"Honest Dear, it was absolutely huge but some ****** pinched it bfore I could finish it off!"
:D

Yes, he's great. Just spent the last hour laid out flat on my lap - fast asleep.

Just tell me one thing though. How can something so small smell so bad? :?

kadabra used do that. the first time he did was when he was on my lap. he just flopped down and lay on his side. I thought he keeled over and died

i agree they do tend to hum a little hahahaha

Hodgesargh
31-05-2005, 04:32 PM
Believe me. This is more - much more - than hum!

What he produces twice a day is a full symphony orchestra & chorus belting its way through the last movement of Beethoven's Nineth!

It can make grown men puke! It's a weapon of mass destruction! It corrodes metal & your sinuses implode in self defence!

Ye Gods, even the cat did a runner and that animal can fart for Britain!

Still, what do you expect from a diet of mice?

Bubo
31-05-2005, 05:04 PM
i was going to say, the diet may be too rich. dont forget they do eat primarily insects especially beetles and grasshoppers. Earth worms are also on the menu along with frogs and birds (minus the wings and tails as they discard these themselves). just a question, are his mutes ok or are they always very black/brown?

bubo

Hodgesargh
31-05-2005, 05:21 PM
Hi Bubo, thanks for your kind interest :)

Mutes are fine and most are fairly odour-free. It just seems that owls (all of them) produce one or two real stinkers each day. Yesterday I was just unlucky to have him on my lap (on a towel thank God) just at the wrong moment.

I've always fed a mix of mouse and chick to little owls (both wild rehabs and captive bred). It seems to produce good, strong, healthy owls. I give my demo LOs a mouse a week - they get very excited. See picture of Bilbo, he retiring one, at five weeks.

Bubo

i love seeing owls with just the tail of the mouse sticking out hahahaha . it is amazing really the size of food they can get down their gullet hahah what a beautiful owl.
