Ok peeps, just a thought as to what method you lot prefer to attach your transmitters to your birds. Whether you use leg mount, tail mount, back pack, neck or other and your reasons why. Over to you!!!!!!!!

Exactly my views as well! but was just interested what others thought and why they choose the methods they do.
Tail mounts. for the same reason as above.

depends on the hawk used, and terrain. Tail mounts ain't always the best method, but if your happy to use them carry on.

Have always used tail mounts as i want as little as possible on the legs.
Years ago when i flew a spar i didn't have telemetry, but would most likely have neck mounted if i had.
As Outflying has said, it really depends on what and where you are flying to a certain degree although i am tempted to try the back pack this season as it appears to be getting good reports

back packs are great on falcons which are not going to go through cover, but I'd never use them on short/broadwings, I use tail mounts there.
The main advantages of the back pack are that even with a long antenna this will not trail behind the train, and so is less likely to get caught up on wire etc., also even with the bird on the ground all the transmitter and ariel is oss the ground, so stronger signal. Transmitter is less likely to get damaged than on the tarsus.

All good points there! Has anyone on here used a back pack?

Been using a tail mount for my Harris and find it has worked well. I have no idea what i'll do when I start flying a Spar :? may try a few different methods to see what suits best.

Been thinking is there not a good chance a tail mount would be pulled out if put on a HH tail when it crashes in to the bushes or flies through a fence.
I only use telemetry on my falcons and then as i said it is a tail mount.

had a post from another forum about backpacks apparently you have to get it perfect when tightening it up. the bloke put it on a gos and if he got it to tight bird goes mad to loose pack falls off. never used one personally so dont know if this is true

A friend used one all season, flown nearly everyday, no problems. Fitted to a barbary tiercel. Yes the fit has to be correct but it's not that difficult to get right. Take a look at the step by step instructions on the Marshall's web site (no you don't need to drug them !).

If your making a back pack out of leather, then any small brass mount will do - just cut 2 small slots in the plectrum, fit the tube to it and then bend the mounting to back of the leather.
Better still buy the ready made plate and ribbon kit from Marshalls.

I've been testing Back Packs on two HH's that hunt in tight cover for the last 6 mnths, no probs what so ever, but i still dont like them??
The birds seem to always appear consouse that they are wearing the pack and although when preened in the pack is pretty invisible, sometimes it still make sthe feathers sit awkwardly, so got my reservations?
Tail mounts are ok, but i lost two along with their centre feathers on sheep fences last season.
Leg mounts! trash transmitters, damage scales, last resort.

Most suppliers have them, Garlands supply the aluminum ones.
