I have been given charge of a redtail that was caught up,jessed up on wednesday,it is a year old and has been in with its parents..................................
I walked around the weatherings and there it sat..(dunno if its a male or female yet)(weight 2lb 6) its mouth and wings wide open and its hackles right up,as it stared at me i went into pick it up and it bated away, hung upside down for a minute....then he/she got up on the fist of his/hers own accord!a day out the avairy! and -flame sat on the fist boggle eyed and full threat stance....bloody hell its feet are massive!.I then took flame back to my house
FRIDAY-woke up at 10 and went straight out and once agaian flame bated away and sat on the fist full threat stance,i offered her a rabbit leg but she wouldnt move her head from my facestaring at me with her grey eyes from under her brow,i manned her for 2 hours and come to write this ..............no i am going to man her and hopes feed on the fist!!

take it easy & remember the bird might not feed for a few days on your fist, just persevere with it

Reds are notorious for going a while without feeding on the glove for the first time so don't be concerned.
Assuming it is not thin then it is without doubt a male. Keep us posted with your progress.

My second RT took 5 days to eat off the fist. At 38 ounces, it is hard to tell if it is M or F, but by your accounts of it's huge feet, I would say it's female. The best way to tell is to look at the head structure and distance between the upper and lower Mandibles. The females generally have a thicker and longer beak than the males do. The more manning the better in my opinion. Get it used to everything you can such as cars, other people, dogs etc....and good luck!

Don't stare at it either!

Weasel, I wouldn't take the "huge feet" part too serious at present as Cyclone is 14 and may not have the knowlege to differentiate between male and female. However the 2lb.6 fat weight out of aviery suggests it is a male.

Cyclone, your previous posts on other threads you claim :-
13th May, you have been given a Canadian GHO 7wks old to train
21st May, you have been given a RT out of aviery 7mths old to train
And today you have been given a RT out of aviery 1yr old
Would you care to tell us a little bit more of your experience with BOP as
i for one would hate to waste my time giving advice to a fictional falconer.
On the other hand if you are genuine, i and others on this forum will gladly give you all the help we can

I can vouch for Cyclone, I work with him at Rosliston Forestry Centre, yep he does have a Saker and does man up all sorts of birds for the head falconer there, including Great Horned Owl and the Redtail.

That will do for me Bob.
His previous postings were a bit dubious, but the lad cleared up the confusion with his post last night.

Ok how sharp is the breast bone? Some breeders have very thin birds and its weight may already be VERY low. I have seen and done this a few times and found the birds flies at a MUCH higher weight than when it came out of the avairy.

Goldie

I have felt a female I later trained flew at 2lbs 3 1/4oz and amazingly was not dead. She flew at 2lbs 10.

HM, this post and your previous one are valid points however, Cyclone said in the initial post the bird was 1yr old and in with its parents. That would leave me to assume it would not be anything other than fat weight or near enough. As he also stated 2lb 6, again it would most likely be a male. Most males in the UK fly at between 2.2+2.5 with the females being in the region of 2.9+2.14 there are also a number well over 3lb.
These figures are based on the subspecies of RT generally available in the UK although there are around a dozen subspecies in the USA.

me saying that he is vocal,i read in Nick Foxs book that they go thru a bulling phase, bulling their parents for food, but surley he cant be dion this bcause he was only caught up a week ago
