have been showing my pup a couple of quail in the garden for a couple of weeks now and she seems to be getting keener around them all the time.
just wondering how you all progressed with your dogs from being shown game to coming on point at game?

A good book is Gun-dog training Pointing Dogs by Kenneth C. Roebuck. isbn 0-8117-0714-8
The answer to your original question is most well bred pointers will do it naturally if exposed to enough game, don't forget your dog is pointing on sight at the moment not pointing on air scent. Try hiding the same quail in long grass and bring your dog in from down wind and let her scent the air.

Yes nightowl, they are good - that's why I put the link up. Maybe a lot is not applicable due to the retriever training. But a lot of good stuff in both.
Yours Jim.

do alot of the pups from working dog lines point naturally?
or do they still need to be encouraged to point?
