Hi everyone, I have just taken charge of a 20 week old European Eagle Owl from the centre where I help out. My question is:
I have a Bow perch, but the owl seems to like perching on a block of wood nearby. Is this OK or can anything be caught from such a perch?

Depends on it's shape. Can you get a picture? If the wood block is higher than the bow, that would be why the owl is going to it.

I would make sure it is safe and that the bird can not get tangled by walking round the block and ending up getting tied up. Usually when techered to a perch we don't have any other obsticles within leash length, except for a round edged safe tangle free bath.

Hi Bob, good choice of bird! Is it just a block of wood or is it a log? My opinion, if the log is still quite fresh and dry, i.e, no possible risk of fungal spores, use that and throw the bow perch away. That will give him the option of wrapping his big fluffy feet around the edge or standing flat-footed on top. Best of both worlds for him. And there's no problem with getting tangled up cos we don't tether owls any more.

Is tethering owls illegal? and how are you supposed to put them out on the weathering lawn without them flying away?

hey bob,
it aint illegal unless you run a centre and have a zoo licence than all the owls have to be free-lofted,but i think it is better off to have them free lofted neways.........good luck with noodles!! p.s he bites!
