View Full Version : 09 Breeding Season

I can’t believe how quickly the breeding season is coming, the rise in temp and sunshine over the last couple of days has kicked many of the falcons in to gear. The tiercles and gyrkins are really picking up with many scraping and making pre-copulation gestures, even some of the young falcons are starting to switch in.
They are at the “not sure whether to kill you are love you” stage, I’m trying not to encourage them too much as its way too early.
I will post as the season develops, looking forward to it as always but maybe even more so this year, with some exciting prospects to look forward to.

Hi Mark, there is nothing quite like the buzz from hatching young falcons, watching them grow and seeing how they develope.
I guess the day I stop getting excited about it, I'll stop doing it.
Looking forward to producing a young falcon for my self this year.:supz:

The speed these falcons are coming on is a little scary, could be an early spring this year.
They may well switch off again but they seem intent, some of the young peregrines are at the.. “ I love you, I hate you” stage.
Even the paired falcons are getting active, lots of vocalizing and display.
Chris
The black fella in your first post Chris, is that the one from bob creese, did you ever manage to get any semen from him

Emma
Hi Emma, yes that’s him, he has been a very slow developer but for the last few seasons he has given good amounts of semen. To be honest I have been too interested in producing pure peregrines to use him seriously, I did have 2 fertile eggs by him last season but neither hatched, whether this was due to him or just coincidence I don’t know.
This year I am going to dedicate one imprint female peregrine to him, I will fill all her eggs with his semen and see what happens, would love to see some of his offspring.

Hi Ross, we have 6 made breeding pairs of peregrines, another peregrine with a gyr x peregrine that produce 3/4 peregrines.
Then we have 2 more peregrine pairs that have not bred yet.
We have 8 young imprints that are looking good for this season and 10 that are already producing, we have 5 semen donor tiercels plus the gyrkins so no problem with semen.

The other big one for this season for me, will be our imprint, Dan Konkel black gyr laying for her 2nd season. We produced 2 gykins last season from her and should do a lot better this year, I hope so as I would be having a female fo my self.

Things are moving on at pase now, the sakers will need inseminating in a week, 3 gyr imprints scraping.
Even the young peregrine females are chupping and coming in, young gyrkins scraping and showing good signs.
Made tiercels and gyrkins are gagging for it, won't start to visit them with the hat untill sunday 1st march though.
Saw the 1st pair of gyrs copulating on the monitor this morning, another 4 pairs are scraping and food passing.
5 paires of peregrines are doing the works, food passing and scraping so much they may go through the bottom of the nest ledge.
Another 2 weeks and all hell will let loose :D

Hi Baz, the sakers are just plain old sakers, to be honest, the birds I have seen that were claimed to be "Alti" were not really any differant to these. (maybe a little bigger)
They produce very nice peregrine x sakers so thats fine, easy to breed from and deal with.

The season is kicking in quickly now with many falcons scraping, tiercels are on the hat each day but only the one giving so far.
1st eggs will be here in to next week, no problem as our new Incubator room, brooder room and office are finished and ready.
Incubators are calibrated, cleaned and fumigated, just need the eggs to put in them.
Some very good activity in some of the younger pairs, could be some exciting 1st time breeders.

Hi Bill, I will hopefuly be producing some perlins this season, I have 6 people in line at the moment for them. With any luck I should do OK, but you never know with perlins untill you have them.
They can be as imprint or parent reared as you like.
I don't take deposits on perlins, as there is always someone waiting in line for one. If would like me to put down for one I will, then lets wait and see what happens.

Hi Paul, very often when falcons come in to breeding condition for the first time, they do it late in the season. We see this in young imprints a lot, it gets to late April and suddenly they kick in.
Then usually the following season they come in earlier and go on to lay, it’s the same for natural pairs.
It sounds like your pair came in late last season for the 1st time, they should start sooner this year and go through the full regime. With paired peregrines it is never easy I’m afraid, often it is the tiercel that is the week link.
All you can do is feed good fresh quail, give them a good environment and the rest should happen on its own.
One tip is to have a good selection of perches at different heights in the chamber, having one close to the nest ledge but higher is a good idea also.
All the best of luck with them, let us know how they get on.

The season is realy getting in to gear now, all the semen donors are on the hat with some giving semen.
The imprint lanner, sakers, and 3 gyr's are all taking semen with the 1st egg's imminant, also my oldest female peregrine taking semen.
Our 1st eggs of the season were layed over night, a natural pair of peregrines and gyr's producing early.

Hi Dave, yes I have hatched eggs with cracks, this one has a small amount of albumin seeping from it though.
I have sealed it and set it to incubate, I did hatch a peregrine egg with the same problem once but the chances are not great, you never know unless you try.

I remember a couple of years ago, one of my peregrines smashed her egg, it was a big dent inwards in the size of a mans thumbnail on day 8 of incubation.
I covered it with this ''fake skin'' you can get from certain pharmacy (hard to get hold of now), its thinner then natural skin and quite fiddly to put on, but its antiseptic and it breaths, the egg hatched perfect!!

"Fiji" keeps giving good shots of semen but don't have the 2 peregrines I want to put him in laying yet, would think they will be 10 days yet.
We have most 1st clutches in the incubators from the natural pairs of gyrs and peregrines, imrpints still some way off, they will all go st once.

This is really turning out to be season of many surprises and some disappointment, each season brings its strange happenings and surprise successes and this one is no different.
Almost all our paired birds have laid or about to lay, gyrs and peregrines, yet the imprints with just a couple of exceptions seem to be way behind. Birds that would normally have eggs by now are still not even standing for copulation.
On the plus side…. Our young white gyr pair have laid for the 1st time, we have not witnessed copulation so we did a forced insemination after the 2nd egg was laid just in case, the falcon went on to lay in perfect sequence after the insemination so we could be lucky.
Another 9 year old white gyrkin that is paired with a ¾ white female has finaly filled eggs, 4 of the 5 in the 1st cluth were fertile to our surprise, can move him to a pure white female now he has proved him self.
Our 3 imprint black gyr females are all standing and taking shots of semen daily, they all have very swollen cloacae and draw semen perfectly but with gyrs this could mean nothing until they actually lay, still good though.
Then this afternoon we saw our young pair of Black gyrs copulate fully on the edge of the nest ledge, they have been doing everything they should but this puts the icing on the cake, just need the falcon to lay now.
The anatum x fiji from Brian Sullivan continues to give very large volumes of semen every day, just wish we had peregrines close to laying, could be 8 or 10 days yet, I doubt he is going to stop any day soon by the size of his donations though.
Our pair of grey gyrs that bred for the 1st time last season decided to do a 5 egg 1st clutch this year, luckily all fertile, this pair produced a female that came out of the hack pen at 4ld 1/4oz last year, her sister was feeding well on the fist before she was shipped out at 3ld 11.3/4oz.
1st eggs are due to pip next Friday so then the fun will really start, 70+ fertile eggs in the incubators at present with still a few 1st clutches to come in, then all the 2nd clutches and the imprints still to lay.
Could be a very busy season.

The season is getting well on and there are what seem to be millions of eggs around, probably not more than 100,000 but it seems like millions.
We now have 17 fertile gyr eggs running in the incubators and 4 more too early to tell, 2nd clutches being laid.
2 of the imprint black gyr females have laid their 1st egg ever, one after standing and taking semen for 20 days and the other 15 days. The 3rd is still taking semen but not laid as yet, starting to swell around the abdomen so it may be soon.
Finely some of the peregrine imprints are starting to lay, most are very late to where they normally are, semen is holding out for now but it could get tight in a week or so.
1st 6 chicks hatched since yesterday with more pipped, so the feeding rounds have started, we will be sick of seeing minced quail before the end of May.

The breeding season madness continues with 15 to 18 hour days and round the clock feeding, lots of good things happening with the occasional minor disaster that all breeding seasons bring.
Chick number 31 hatched this morning and the 1st have gone in with the imprints, loads more pipped and still lots on the nest ledges.
At last the peregrine imprints have started to lay, so another 2 weeks of inseminations and the egg laying will be over for this year.

Hi Jam, yes we incubate all imprint laid eggs from day one in the X8's, the temp is set to 39.5c but we take more notice of the temp on the eggs them selves.
I like these to be between 37.7c and 38.3c, then we move all eggs at day 14 to our grumbachs.

The season is flying by, most pairs are on 2nd clutches and the imprint peregrines have finely started laying. Getting a good number of chicks out with falcons now so lightening the load a little, until the next hatches that is.
Chick number 47 hatched this morning with 3 more pipped, another week and the next round start to pip.

Your not wrong there Greg, every chick is fed fresh killed prime quail from hatch to fledge, imagine what a brood of 5 gyrs in with a pair can go through in a day!
One young female gyr can eat 3 prime quail a day when its 4 weeks old, when all the chicks are out being reared we will be going through 500 quail a week, at about £1 each it comes to a pretty sum.
But when you see the end result it is worth the expense, perfect healthy fat young falcons.
Chris
P.S. We have bred some 7/8th for the 1st time from a white gyrkin in with a 3/4 white female, the 1st chicks look anemic, may make yours look dark
I not really worried Chris I love the one I've got and I'm looking forward to the dark one!

After a slow down in hatching over the last week, we are now seeing the 2nd run beginning. The last 24 hours have seen 5 chicks hatch and another 8 pip, lots more are drawing down and the next week to 10 days will see most of the 2nd clutches hatching.
Our 1st ever gyr chick bred from a white female hatched this evening, this was the 1st year she laid at 4 years old, so we did a forced insemination after egg 2 was laid. Egg 3 and 4 were fertile, egg 3 being the one to hatch today and the 4th has pipped, this makes 60 chicks to date.
Some photos of the white gyr chick, gykin imprint, 2 tiercels imprints and a female red nape we are imprinting.

The latest hatchings now bringing us to 66 chicks so far, including 14 pure gyr’s.
The imprint peregrines are almost clutched up and some sitting tight, so the inseminations are almost over for another year, apart from my imprint Merlin who has decided to start laying now!
The tiercels are just about done but luckily the peales seems to still be producing, so if I can get a few perlins I will be content for this season.
Another 40 + eggs getting ready to pip over the next week or so, then 5 clutches still out on the nest ledges and more under the imprints, so still a way to go yet.

Hi Sara, yes the peregrines were so late we ran out of gyr semen by the time they were on 3 eggs or so, we may do 8 or 10 gyr peregrines but no more.
we have finished them off with peregrine semen, no problem as we have 30 + female peregrines on order so we will need them.
Still early but if most of our gyr eggs get out we could hit 30+ pures and 20+ 7/8th, we have the 2 from the white female out and were waiting for the 4 black eggs to get to start hatching this weekend.
Good luck with the rest of yours.

More chicks hatched over the weekend and this morning brining the total to 77 so far, of these there are 18 gyrs and 15 7/8th. Another 10 eggs pipped and more queuing up behind them, by next week the hatchings will be about over for this season. :supz:
The 1st 2 black gyr eggs have pipped as well as 2 more whites, should be out sometime tomorrow with luck.
The imprints are all either incubating or rearing now, even “Coco” has some baby’s to look after and is doing a fine job.
Oldest chicks are starting to leave the nest ledges and run around the floors of the aviaries, another week and we should start moving the 1st ones in to the hack pen.

Hi Rob, all the female peregrines and larger falcons go in to the hack pen for 3 weeks but not the tiercels, they go in to a large pen. These 1st bunch will go in as they are 2 tiercels, a male peregrine x lanner and a male peregrine saker.
The darkest chick in the photos is a peregrine x lanner, the 2 tiercels are from one of our best pairs that throw good sized birds but not that dark.

Sounds like you guys are really having a great season and I must say with all the hard work you deserve it! I think I'm going to be more than happy woth the birds I'm going to fly this season. I'm still waiting to see the first new feathers on this white 7/8ths so I can judge what he's going to look like. Not sure if he's going to show me before I go away so I will have a surprise when I return home! He's already dropped 4 sets of primaries the two decks and several secondaries and back feathers but has been very slow to start on the body feathers.

Hi Greg, your right mate, I've been up to my ears in it. Just to show it is not all good, we have had a rash of infections in some of our chicks over the last week. We had 7 chicks went off their food and looking bad, I set about treating them with fluids and antibiotics. I lost the 3 youngest chicks at 2 and 4 days old, 2 peregrines and my sooty chick :(
But luckily the others have all made a complete recovery, thank goodness my "Coco" chick was not effected and has turned out to be a falcon
All the 1st clutch falcons are starting to fly off the nest ledges, as soon as the weather improves I'll get some photo's up.
Just hit 28 pure gyrs and 19 x 7/8ths, another black pipped and one more to go. We are going to take the 2nd clutch from our last pair of gyrs this morning, then that will be all the gyrs done.

Hi Mark, it is **** when that kind of thing happens, you get all the way to a healthy chick and it's gone in an instant. But we have to put it to one side and forget it or it would send you mad, it's best to be thankful for your successes and not dwell on the losses.

Mark, This breeding game continues to break all the rules. I have a natural breeding pair of 13 year old peregrines that every year since their third season, have reared two clutches with no problems, exemplary parents. This year I happened to be watching them on the camera after having replaced a 4 day old chick with them. All was well for a couple of hours with the falcon brooding it until I saw the tiercel reach under the brooding falcon, drag the chick out by the neck, and was walking about and was just about to foot it when I raced out ,banged the wall of the pen which made her drop it. I took the tiercel out and put him in another pen.
Fortunately no damage done and the falcon proceeded to raise the chick on her own.
As I said these were an experienced pair. So any "expert" who is rash enough to say "they will always do this" or "never do that" just hasn't had long enough to know that there will always be broken rules.
Alistair
Hi Chris,
I'm sorry to hear the bad news from you and Mark! The last time I had a pair of Gosses together I was over the moon when I saw two healthy looking chicks in the nest, the next morning nothing! I'm afraid I've not tried to breed Goshawks since!
I put my peregrine with a tiercel a few weeks ago in hope of them doing something next season but its my first attempt with falcons so I just they know what to do!

Hi Colin, thanks mate, we are having our share of problems with some of the last peregrine chicks like many others. Up to now we have lost 8 chicks that should have done fine, with luck we will get to the bottom of it and find out what the problem has been. The thing with breeding falcons or any raptor, you have to accept the losses that will inevitably occur and be grateful for the successes, if you let it bother you, you would go nuts.

Hi Chris,
This is the worst season I have had in 20 years. I think I saw it all (What can go wrong that is...). If I was cocky about breeding Falcons I have been humbled beyond words....
Just the other day I had a 4 week old female Gyrfalcon get a Quail bone stuck in the area at the base of the crop-sour crop and die... I opened her up and found a bone shaped in a triangle with sharp edges from the upper breast bone and collar bone. I did not even know a bone shaped like this could be made by a Falcon. She was a moose of a Black Gyrfalcon and the first bird I made from my Labrador stock Jerkin.....
Looks like you are having a great season and very happy some of the birds I sent over have worked out. Keep the pictures coming as I have really enjoyed seeing your fruits of hard labor.

Sorry to hear that Brian, it does seem that as soon as we become relaxed about things, Mother Nature kicks us in the rear as a wake up.
The heat here at the moment is the only problem we are having, were not used to this sort of heat. The gyrs we took off the nest ledges and placed on the floor seem to be bearing up ok, luckily the weather is due to change from Friday with some cooler days and rain. Bring it on I say, I don't know how you guys cope when you have even hotter weather at this time than we do.

The temps are rising here by the weekend. The high 33.8 C... It will even get hotter in July and August.
I have solar fans that turn on when the temps start to climb. Also a over head watering system that can cool the building down..
Learned or relearned some major things about breeding Falcons this season!
Anxious to see your Fiji crosses when they grow up.

there is not a breeder who tells the truth ,who makes some of the same mistakes at least twice we are all making notes and mental notes for next year allready , one of the worst things is going all the way then falling at the last fence,:) just lost a barbary the same way .there is allways next year which is the falcon breeders maxim and no con silation , two chose,s keep smiling or not thats about it , we all try to ware the trauma but it still is painfull:)least you got that far

Thankfully the cooler conditions have arrived as forecast, yesterday was blistering here but the young falcons seemed to ride it out without a problem. The youngest gyr chicks have faired far better on the floors of the chambers, the hack pen falcons have been quite active even in the hottest part of the day which was surprising.
The pairs were not enjoying the heat although it’s amazing how many refuse to use the bath, even when filled with fresh clean water they still sit the day out without going for a cool dip.

Waiting for reports now of her flying! The 1/4 Anatum in her is from my Eva line and these were very hot in the Sky. Ed Pitcher has a male from this line that he calls "Hannibal" and this Tiercel Anatum was another great flier and producer. When all the birds are shipped I will sit down and put together all the linage of the birds you imported.

She is looking nice , the boss likes it . The silver female is doing nice and believe it or not chupped last night and she's still a downie .She is a bit pamperd , Lesley freezes bottles of water for her to cuddle into when she gets warm and they work a treat , thats todays top tip !!!!!
The black 7/8ths is as good a imprint as iv seen , chups already and apart from that is quiet as a yorkshire man after spending a tenner lol
The grey jerkin , f****** thing , yap yap yap , wish it was on the plane , i know a philipeano vet that is getting a new room mate hehehe and a pakistani assistant who is getting chunkie chicken for a roomie .
I might give the 7/8ths and the gyr a crack at the geese in november for a bit fun between game flights , what do you think

Than goodness the taking up of the 15 falcons from the hack pen went without incident this morning, each falcon was caught and fitted with hood and jesses then blocked.
Some wild cats amongst them and some quite laid back, we will leave them to settle then start working with them from tomorrow.
