HH love the new avatar mate very cool.............do you mean the stuff like artificial grass, ie as in grengrocerss shops etc or actual astro turf?
if it the grass stuff remember it can be a bitch to clean and harbours more nasties than good old astro can!

How much do you want/need. I've got a couple of sq. meters I bought the other year; if you only want a few feet, I'm sure we could come to some kind of arrangement.
It is the short fine stuff, not like the mats some people use.
This calls for Astroman! lol!

i baught some of that green grocer grass for a fiver from the whole salers BUT i refuse to use for anything i realy think it's naff, the real good stuff is as brian says quite expensive, i've used natural branch and covered a main perch with plastic bristled floor mats, which were baught at a car boot sale for a pound each, these mats have been knocked on the forum,i don't feed a great deal in the mews but to clean it i borrowed (indefinately) a plastic bristled horse brush, you get splashed alot but it does the job.

Cheers WW, I thought you might prefer it to the Liverpool Club Badge seeing as your a MAN U surpporter
I have been using the stuff like artificial grass and have found it to be quite good, purchased it from a falconry company. I agree it can be a little tricky to clean.
Cheers SS After a few feet or so for some perches, will probably try and get some other surfacing as well just to vary the perches a little. Will see you on msn next time your on.
Brian are you able to provide Astro turf in smaller quantities or is it just by the metre?
Cheers for all the help & advice,
HH

Another alternative but it is a bit more work is to cut the central tred pattern out of old bike tyres, fastened onto perches it makes a great sanitary perch covering?

I think carpet is quite good just rip it out at the end of the season and through it away. Works for breeding pens and aviarys. I prefer the door mat stuff. It is the easiest to clean just put it into hot water and let it soack for 5 min then just beat it on a hard surface and all the dirt flies out.

I agree M. I take out the astro, every few months; boiling water, scrub then a good spray of Vydaphor.
Cable tied on or taped, the rubber and astro is easy to keep clean and sanitised.

I have used boiling water on astroturf and it started to melt.
I still feel there must be something better than Astroturf though?
Rubber seems to be the best, according to the health experts.

How about some freshly cut branches to provide perches, screwed to the avairy walls and changed every 6 months. They seem to like them in the wild  (branches that is).

I like astroturf for the weight distribution on the feet but remember reading somewhere rubber (and astroturf with it's high surface area) holds more bacteria per cm than wood!

at the centre I volunteer at the astroturf is all removable and cleaned daily this way you don't get any problems, as long as its not left for ages it cleans up easily
