View Full Version : Strangest thing I have ever come across

My last jill gave birth to here kits yesterday. 8 kits (unsexed as of yet). The most bizarre thing I have ever come across happened. Five of the kits became entangled in each others umbilica. I had to kill one of them to save the rest. The umbilica had raped around each other causing the young to become locked together around the bellies. One had its back paw caught up in the mess and its leg had obviously died. It was this one I sacrificed. The others where then carefully cut away one at a time. It is twenty four hours since and apart from being rather red (and slightly bruised) around the area of the belly, they all seem ok. I regret not taking a photo to show you all, but my concerns where not with photography at the time.
Anyway, one to watch out for.

I've experienced something in cattle similar where upon the womb gets twisted! obvioulsy as cattle commonly only have one calf the effects are not so dramatic as with your ferret kits, but it sounds like the same type of thing. Prehaps the members on the forum who are vets can elighten us on what it is or if they have come across such a thing in ferrets.
new one on me ian,as you say one to watch out for, generaly trouble free in that department (birth) it's the couple of day's following when i've had most probs.

sounds good jiff, if its seen by the elite to be as it says on the tin then they wont hound you, the humour thing is a must as i think there is becoming a gulf between people starting out who find it hard to get good advice and the Falconer with 100ha of grouse and 12 beaters he can shout at.

Careful with that keyboard Jiff, wawking could be mistaken for walking, hawking and something else that can be done with just one hand. (apart from hawking!)
All the best,

good news I think? The kits areseem to be doing ok now. The ones that were caught up in the mess have bruised stomachs and look tender, but nevertheless they are alive, feeding and growing. Time will tell I suppose, and I will keep those interested posted.
thanks
Wiley.
i think i'll stick to the forum members, seems like a load of hassle and i don't like the sound of "cost a pretty penny too" we have enough members of varying degrees of compitance there is always some one to advise or give advice atleast this way you know you're on the right subject.
as for the kits ian be warry mate you know as well as i do that they'll fade fast without warning, not trying to be negative mate, best wishes with em. you're not out of the woods yet.
