Hi All
Inspired by a picture that "JackMerlin" sent me the other day of a real Jack Mavro' made hood (that can be seen below). Still a great hood pattern today, I will be putting a pic up of this hood on a Lanner shortly :)
They are made with "Slide Over" braces to limit feather pinch and also made from leather to stay true to the retro look.
These hoods are available for both Hawks & Falcons...... See more detail here. (http://www.m-jhoods.co.uk/Anglo_Indian_M.htm)

Here is a pic of an original hood made by Jack Mavrogordato, note the pinched sewn eye seams. This hood was made from Lizard skin and I believe was used on a Peregrine.

Hi All
Inspired by a picture that "JackMerlin" sent me the other day of a real Jack Mavro' made hood (that can be seen on my website on the "Historical Hoods" section). Still a great hood pattern today, I will be putting a pic up of this hood on a Lanner shortly :) I can see that is a mavro pattern, very pretty hood Griff( when is your new arrival due?)
They are made with "Slide Over" leather braces to avoid feather pinch. These sound interesting, are they part stiched ? rolled and stuck together, have you found even with goretex, that they pinch sometimes? If so a new innovation like this/ yours has got to be a good thing
These hoods are available for both Hawks & Falcons...... See more detail here. (http://www.m-jhoods.co.uk/Anglo_Indian_M.htm)

I was up at my fathers house yesterday and I saw this lying around on the sideboard.
It came complete with a female perigrine fitted couertsy of Croft Slater back in the 80s.
Does your "Retro" J M hood have the feature shown in the second photo Griff?
Nice hoods guy's.
If were on the subjet of retro hoods...........
This is a hood from 1980 made by Robin Haigh...

Hi Bash
That appears to be a Glasier Gos hood, I have not heard the name "Robin Haigh" in hood making circles..... do you collect hoods Bash? If so, have you got any more pics of others in your collection?
It was made for me by Robin who seemed to be a well known hood make during the seventies and eighties. It was Glasier that put me in touch with him. As you can see, it is still in good condition as I never really used it. You do know your hoods don't you Griff! You are correct it was for a female Gos.
I've often thought about collecting hoods but have never done it. The only other hoods I've got are all made by myself and I have one Ben Long Harris hood from the eighties as well.
I've seen the old hoods on your web site. Are they yours?

Hi Bash
I wish the hoods on my "Historical Hoods" section were mine.....but alas not...they are pics I have got from mags or the web. Hoods are very collectable and once you get into them its very interesting ....with everything there is a history and finding out the background of a maker etc is just as fun.
One day I will own an original "Mollen" hood .... at the moment I am steadily collecting the US hoodmakers who started the modern Dutch hoods we have today.... people like Ron Rollins, Jim Nelson and a few others. Jim Nelson is bringing out a book on hoods that will be available through "Western Sporting Publications" very soon and will be a bible on hoods, hooding and Hood making.
Hoods appreciate in value very quickly, my Rollins hoods (early 90's) are each worth over £150.

:?: :D
Some of the American hoods I've seen have been quite amazing. The tooling detail on them look good.
What did spark an interest a while ago were some hoods on sale on ebay. Don't know if they were for real or not as my knowledge on them is limited but they suggest that they were c1600. Can't remember what they went for but it was alot. haven't seen any more since.
Sorry Blackbird, I've taken the thread a little off topic, sorry mate.

Hi Blacky... sorry m8 missed your question..... no ...is the answer... i have not seen that in a JM Anglo. I dont understand its purpose either as when the brace is folded into the slots they dont cause any problems? Do you know why "Croft Slater" added that feature to it?

I dont know why either Griff :?:
Paranoia perhaps
As I have said before, I do own an original snakeskin Mavro hood.
Finding it is the stumbling block  I think it may of been lost in the house fire I had last year
What I do remember is that it had the same braces feature as the one i have posted :? hmm?

Griff,
Could you be persuaded to use the same kind of tooling on the leather of the "Mavro" on the standard anglo-indian? The one you sent up for me to look at was superb, but (personally) I don't like the look of it on my falcon. By the way your pics don't do the hoods justice really to anyone looking, they're even better in the flesh..

Hi Bash
Yes ....I saw those hoods to....... the problem with purchasing a hood like those we saw on ebay is "provenance"..... A couple of forum members emailed the guy who was selling them for proof of antiquity but ....alas noe could be provided.... there were a couple of features on those hoods that didnt ring true.... if you are going to buy a hood from an auction like that then "provenance" is a must.... if none can be provided then you are taking a gamble.... I certainly would not have paid the money they whent for without it...... but who's to say that the person who purchased them had a better idea of their worth.

Any body thats doubts the fit of a Mavro Anglo should look at this pic, this is a friends Pere Tiercel that was here this morning ..... great looking falcon ...smaller head than the average Tiercel..... and the Mavro was the one.... look at the "Gape opening" fit.....just spot on!!!
