Carl how are you going to stop these posts from falling over? Looking at the one shown I am sure one of my Eagles would be able to drag it all over the place if not fly off with it still attached.
I am not knocking your product and I am sure you know me well enough by now to realise that. I think the idea is a good one but you may have to look at stability before marketing it.

The two we have made so far have 3 holes in the base, that allow 3 dog spikes to be screwed into the ground. That seems to do the trick and the owners don't seem to have any complaints and they are working well.

I do try to cover all base on design, thanks for the comments Terry.

Kind Regards Carl

Hi Carl, what size is the top of the Post? and what is the total Height?
The screw in dog spikes should do the trick

Carl How are you getting round the new animal welfare act/bill with these perches can the bird actualy reach the ground to drink water, As far as I am aware we must always leave water for the birds to drink. Just curious as no doubt many others are with these high perches. We all no they don't drink that much but the new legislation doesn't take that into acount?.

I do not wish to turn this ino an argument, we see quite enough of that on here as it is, but our birds should have access to fresh drinking water at all times.....regardless of 'legislation.

Which is my point exactly not also wishing to start an arguement, but with high perches where on earth do you put the water.

This will go for falcon's or hawks attached to screen perches and shelf perch also I expect. I use this type of perch around work while I am around my own personal falcons are weathered in the morning and offered a bath then later put on these perch's while i go around my work before hunting them. I had not looked into the new legislation my be you could post a link and also start a new thread pointing out all the points in the legislation.

I have never given my falcons access to fresh water a day round, whilst i am hunting for fear of the bathing before taking them out hawk and who does. Should we also provide them with drinking water while the are also bedded down or during winter?

It would not be that hard to incorporate to be honest and I will offer this when this type of perch is ordered in future at extra cost thanks for pointing this out.

Regards Carl Carl it was't a pop or anything , I was told by a wildlife liason police officer some time back, that the reason the bill was to be ammended was to cover horses that where teathered to the roadside all day without drinking water that was what the act was designed to cover but I was told the wording of the act was to include any animal including bird that was teathered should have access to drinking water . When the act came in I don't know for sure I always cover myself as my eagle is free lofted and when he's teathered on the lawn he does have access to drinking water, I understand people use screen perches etc I have used them to good effect in the past myself. I will make enquiries tommorow.
Ignorance of the law is no defence, So im sure we can find someone who knows .

The best person to look into this would be Hattie (FlameHairedFalconer) she is a Solicitor and a Falconer, I hope she sees this and replies .
I have a meeting at Page Street with Animal Health on Tuesday this is mainly about Ports of Entry and Exit of Birds in the UK but I am sure we can get them to give us their interpretation of the new Act regarding water as none of us will be providing water for birds going on Export. We always put a note on the Box's "No Food or Water for 24 Hours" so I wonder where this new Act will leave us now. We could defend this as the birds are all hooded prior to shipping.

Terry It might also be prudent to ask somebody like Niel Forbes for an opinion especialy if your putting a notice on a box no food or water for 24hrs I'm pretty sure all the talks that I have attended by Niel he say's no food is ok but bird's must have water within 24 hrs.

Tom it would be a little difficult for the birds to drink when in the travelling box's as they are hooded, normally these birds are caught boxed and shipped to their destination within 12 Hours but the last thing I want is some numpty at the AQS dragging a totally untrained Gyr Falcon worth £20,000 out of it's box and probably damaging the tail or wings in the process to see if the bird would like a cool drink and then not being able to get the hood back on so just shoving the bird back into the box with the Hood thrown in afterwards.
I know you think it would not happen but I have had a bird arrive at Heathrow and be pulled out of the box 8 times when the Vet inspected the bird at 8 am it was fine by the time I got it at 9pm the wing had been broken and no one would take responsibility for the damage they just told me it was like it when it arrived even when the MAFF Vet told them it was fine when he inspected it 12 hours erlier when it arrived they still would not admit it had happened due to their mishandeling the bird.

Terry I have every sympathy with you , I don't write the rules and reg's as long as you can argue your case if required then that's all you can do, I was asking a question originaly , that maybe we should all seek clarification on. I'm pretty sure Terry Large from the Campaign for Falconry knows a bit more about this than I do. I took an Eagle to italy several years ago, by British airways and I was on the same flight and animal quarantine had the bird took of the plane without my knowledge because they were concerned the bird had no food or water, I arrived in italy with no bird and a film crew doing there nut, I had to get D.O.E. to intervene and get bird sent out on next flight. No appologies no nothing quite disgusting. There a law unto themselves.
