View Full Version : loop leashes and swivel clips.

The setup I have is a spiked block, a portable block and a shelf in the weathering. Both perches and the shelf have loop leash rings so I don't need to worry about jesses tangling with the leash knot.

However a friend of mine has quite a few birds, some of which are hawks (spar, harris). The bow perches have normal rings and can not accommodate loop leashes, and therefore are not safe for periods of time when pegged out.

I have been asked to look on the net for some sort of clips that stop the knot moving away from the swivel, I have had a bit of a look but can not seem to find what I am looking for, and am thinking there must be someone on hear that uses them or has tried them out. Any info on these clips would be great, especially if they can be made easily at home.

Thanks in advance to anyone willing to spend a bit of time helping me out.

I presume you mean when the knot moves away from the swivel ring and get tangled or twisted between the jesses ?
If so then as a simple solution I would suggest using a loop leash itself and if good quality leash it stays in place although a little more awkward to unteather. Alternatively, try a leather washer on the other side of the swivel ring

A variant on the loop leash would solve the problem - ie a normal leash with a loop instead of a button and long enough to attache to perch with a falconers knot.

I make my own loop leashes, possibly I will have to take bills method if I can't find what I'm looking for.

I use this method. tied with a falconers knot.
I have never experienced a tangle with large hawks. I will be trying it on a spar this season.

cool

how are the swivels like after a few months? Are they still totally safe?

Is it not a bit tricky to pass the leash through the mews jesses with one hand after a few bates?

Just asking bb looks good

They are not mews jesses OMG.
they are permanent flying jesses. Traditionals without swivel slits.
Below is a shot of them slackened for clarity (I say clarity? Please excuse the photo!!)
Their attachment is easier than a conventional swivel, even with numb fingers :D
(never had a problen with the swivels and they only cost 60p!)

I weigh 16 stones and can swing by the whole set up!

yeah should be considered, I like this bb as you need to keep flying jesses on when flying hawks really anyway so it's efiicient to say the least.

Think I would be scared of my bird untying it though! for a while

thanks again.

Believe me OMG there is no chance of this!
Try the knot with two flying jesses and a doubled leash you will be pleasantly suprised M8.

I'm not 100% sure if your asking about alternatives to make the bow perch work with a loop leash or if your asking about jesses...but if your question is related to the loop leash and bow perch / ring...here is how I have modified mine...

I had the stainless ring on my bow perch cut, then I inserted a sampo swivel, then had it rewelded...then simply used the button leash and another type of sampo clip that has a small wire end that is inserted into my jesses which are not slit but simply have small holes punched in the Roo leather a couple of inches from the end.

See pics for more clarity if my written description is not good enough...

Good luck~

A simple solution to a simple problem.
Exellent!

I believe blackbirds method is simplest and the way forward for bows as it is strong and the method being used.

Thanks lee, I used these clips on my lures and had large falcons bend the clip. Thanks but I am not convinced they are safe for long periods, not a thin bit of metal like that.

I am quite surprised to hear that your falcon can bend or break this type of snap-lock. The one pictured in my album is a saltwater fishing coast-lock swivel rated for either 500lbs or 800lbs (the exact number eludes me at the moment) and my 1200 grams Red-tail never once came close to bending or breaking it. I do realize my leash is not overly long so maybe my RT is simply not able to gather the speed / power with which to break it but I still find it a bit tough to swallow that any bird under 3lbs could destroy the snap. I am sure my Kangaroo Jesses would tear out long before the snap broke and I inspect them daily and they have zero signs of wear and or tearing at the small “pin holes” I have punched in them, but then again she is well manned and simply doesn’t bate from the perch with any regularity. Either way…it was simply a suggestion for possibly solution to the bow perch / ring issue and I wanted to defend and clarify my earlier post in case someone was still interested in using this method because I it has worked very well for me on my last 2 passage Redtails and I couldn’t be happier.

Lee

ok thanks lee.

I must have been using some cheap imitation if they can hold that strain.

I didn't find the ones I was using good at all and think I have been put off this design by copies. I think I purchased them from falconry suplies of some kind advertised as 'lure swivels'.

cheers

OMG, have you tried useing Sampo swivels? they are stainless steel ball bearing type, you would probably want size 6.

thanks

yes I use them for my lure and if I ever had a hawk on a bow I would usse them in my leashes as bb explained earlier.
