There is a new magazine (Revista Camalote) about the fauna, habitats and tourism attractions in the southern Amazon rainforest that is being published in Brazil. It is published in two languages, Portuguese and English. It will be of interest to naturalists considering visiting the Pantanal, the Amazon and the cerrado savannahs for birding, animal-watching and to experience a bit of Amazonian and indigenous culture. It is published in colour, by local journalists and photographers, so by getting it you are helping a local business. Each edition has a variety of articles about local nature conservation policy, what local government agencies are doing to halt forest fragmentation, how soybean farming can be made more sustainable, the best places to go to see wildlife such as Hyacinth Macaw and Jaguars and what conferences are being held. Such as the forthcoming Katoomba Conference on carbon trading and ecological economics.
It will be also of interest to travel enthusiasts, students of Latin American studies, languages and biological conservation, indeed anybody with an interest in what conservationists are doing to maintain and enhance the appeal of an area and facing difficult logistics, powerful and conflicting interests and bureaucacy in one of the world's biological hotspots (the Pantanal wetland and Amazon rainforest).
