Both operations take practice and skill to perfect, no photographs or video can teach it correctly, needs to be seen in practice with explanations on what’s happening.

Thats for definite Chris If I'm showing someone I get them to video it so their memory doesn't play tricks on them But they must see it for themselves Its hard enough to learn even them!

It's very much a hands on application that gets perfected after numerous times. I'm forced to strip birds every season and just walked in from stripping a Barbary and Peregrine as I'm expecting second clutch recycles from my Saker and Barbary on Thursday night. Wish I had lots of extra chambers to fill with young male and work them to the hat but that's not practical for me right now so a few imprint/misprinted males that just won't do the job get several rounds of tuff love every spring. Most people wrap them up and press it out of them, works for most but I use this method below. This is a two person job, the male is hooded and has jesses on and perched on a helpers gloved fist and in a standing position the person doing the collection grabs the bird from behind (like one would grab a homing pigeon) off the helper gloved fist then the helper draws the jesses and feet down into there glove carefully to make sure the bird is not footing it self then the collector will gently control the wings and raise them together straight up over the birds head and pass them to the helpers free hand this cuts down any struggle to a minimum as the bird is held by it's feet and wings good judgement needs to be in place when holding the bird you don't want to stretch them out like they were in the dungeon on the racks just enough they can't thrash up and down. The collector has both hands free and from behind and still a standing position gently gather the tail and lifts it up and out of the way between the middle and index finger exposing the vent then with thumb of the hand holding the tail up you apply gental pressure coming from the abdomen towards the cloaca very careful and slowly apply more pressure as you reach the cloaca will start to roll out just prior to semen droplets appearing gravity is on your side so just a tad bit more pressure and they should bubble out with the collectors free hand the capillary tube can be guided to collect the droplets of semen (if it squirts out your going to fast and to much pressure, been shot a few time over the learning curve years myself usually when I needed it bad but just never could manage to wring it out of my shirt LOL) I have plenty of capillary tube ready and never pick up more then one drop as it comes as the draw back to stripping is the bird could mute at any point and spoil the whole collection best to get a few little Indepented samples then combined them later. Once done ( lt takes me less the 45 seconds start to finish) the helper simply releases the wings and feet at the same time with a slight toss up with the glove while controlling the jesses and the bird is standing hooded on the glove wondering if he is getting his quail now. No worries of being footed, bit or over heating the bird. There is a learning curve to everything but nothing ventured nothing gained I have stripped many birds for my self and others whom felt unsure to attempt it them self's and have never had a single thing go wrong other then a mute spoiling things, if you watch the bird and strip just after it mutes things will go much as planned. Most birds that are stripped are not always jessed and such so they have to be caught up hooded and held as described then un hooded and released back into a room this obviously takes a bit longer start to finish. For me my strip birds spend about 6 weeks blocked in the weathering yard once things are done and falcons are sitting on eggs they are released into the chambers and ready for the molt.

I have no experience of stripping what so ever, but waqs told by some guys that they watch the bird and wait for it to mute before they strip him. that way it avoids the risk of contamination with mutes. Do not know if it is true but that is what I was told.

Its a long time since I have had to do it but used to feed ad lib as soon as I had stripped and then not feed till he was stripped again this way most of the mutes had gone through. If you don't do something I found a lot of the semen was contaminated. This is one of the many advantages of hat birds.
