View Full Version : "Ros" the Gos. 2005 Imprint Goshawk

I picked up my 2005 eyass Goshawk yesterday. He is a pure Finnish Bird and this morning weighs 1lb 4oz empty, He is 15 days old.
It turned out to be a five hour drive to collect him and it was an interesting trip! My slap happy driving style nearly made it game over for PCHay and myself a grand total of three times but at least the long journey home passed without incident.
He woke me at six this morning pecking at his food dish because he had eaten the two chicks I had left him with overnight so I butchered a quail and he wolfed half of it in one sitting.
He was weighed and prior to feeding him we did a little hood work. The hood was left in his tank all night<Btw>.
I popped the hood on him for about a second (Braces struck) and removed it. I repeated this three times then the fourth time I let it sit on his head (struck) and quickly placed his food in the tank, Then I removed the hood and dropped it beside him.
When he was full I picked up the hood and offered it to him, he nibbled it then put his head inside!
Good lad!
Will post pictures as soon as I get new photo editor software.

I dont follow a "Recipie" Ben. I'll cook it to my taste as I go along :D

I have always had respect for imprinted birds, but I have never had the time or the right situation to do this with a Goshawk. I had a Spar coming but that has passed me by and the Gos just seemed easier than chasing a spar that I probably wouldnt get.
I got him from a bloke in Gwent called Martin. Very nice chap.
While I was there I viewed wis donor tiercel and my birds mothers sister.(EH?) They were impressive birds but he was unsure whos lines they came from?

Ahh of course. Do the methods of imprinting remain generally the same for all raptors, or can you tweek them to suit a particular falcon/hawk?

Very similar realy Ben, but a lot of different people have a lot of different takes on it

BenC, I'm doing things slightly different this time but only from learning small details of change from my last goshawk. Just a small change in approach can make a big difference to the final outcome.
The worst thing that can happen is that you produce a dangerous imprint both to yourself and others.

Thats an exellent point Jim. personaly I dont mind an aggressive imprint but one that is aggressive to others is prety much as bad as it could get ever!

Tim,
I don't think it is difficult to imprint a male gos and avoid any aggression problems - if you get the weight right at the beginning. Females I'm told are a different matter but males usually aren't aggressive.
Jim.
Tim Laycock
01-07-2005, 12:20 AM
Interesting Jim.
I have never imprinted a male of any species. Only females all of which were vicious b4stards.
PCHays tiercel gos does not make a sound and it is soft as a kitten, not far from penning either!
Tim

01-07-2005, 12:29 AM
Tim,
My male gos did not make a sound until weight reduction and obedience was required. The only time (once only) aggression was shown was on an early kill, when he left the kill to attack my foot, a small weight reduction cured this fault immediately. I could place my bare hands in on any kill and dispatch it or open it for him with no problems what so ever. Aggression was never an issue.
Jim.
ps Will drop bow perch off sometime next week.

When you say noise.....are we talking LOTS or just for a while until you get out into the field?
Noise level will be governed by many factors what age was it taken, how it was fed, where it was fed, is it catching, how low is it ? etc etc It could be screaming 24 hours if you've got it wrong. Not an easy subject to explain in a short post.

Hi Tim
It looks like a female to me, but if hes had it DNA sexed, then they are 99.9% correct, we have had 4 sexing wrong out of 50 birds, so sometimes they can be wrong,
Just looking at the cere and thickness of the leg, also no room in the V ring, also the weight at 15 days, was very heavy for a Fin male,
could be a fin female, if so keep it to yourself,

17 days old.
Weight this evening was 1lb 8oz
Plans changed with the Pheasant as it had not thawed properly so today he recieved one 1/2 grown rabbit, one quail and a couple of chicks.
The heart, lungs and kidneys of the rabbit and quail were left in, as were all the bones but these were "Tenderised" with a hatchet prior to dicing.
The chicks were processed yolk and all.
Hood training continues as before with the hood being used every time his food dish is topped up. he now has no fear of the hood at all as the hood is left in the imprint tank all the time next to his platter. (He has crapped on it three times now but hey, it cost nothing!!) 8)

Out of interest how did you remove the ring? I've always had problems using pliers etc in the past with tight rings as they cut inwards and leave sharp edges. I know there is a proper tool you can get but not exactly readily available!
Tim Laycock
05-07-2005, 10:26 PM
Brand new wire cutters.
I did considder going to the jewelers but in the end, The sharp wire cutters did the job fine as even the tips of the blades were still sharp.
The cross section of the ring deformed very little as the material was not as malneable as I had expected it to be.
It was over in seconds but there was much noise made about it!!!

I heard a general rule of thumb is that the weight at 26 days old is not far off the flying weight when fully penned, if this is the case then a female flying at say 2lb 10+ would have a lot to gain in the next six days. not sure how true this is, maybe someone who has kept daily records of imprint birds will be able to clarify.

Antics a plenty.
You can see from the pictures the size of the big tank. You would think it would hold a 22 day old gos with no problems wouldnt you.
It holds her, but only just.
She is a budding escapologist alright. She now takes running jumps at the lip of the tank once or twice a day and always ends up laid in a panting, crumpled heap afterwards.
Its a bit worrying because to say her feathers are in the blood is somewhat of an understatement!
I am forced to admit being at a loss with this one as I have never seen anything like it before.
She is far too young to be jessed and obviously has issues with the tank.
Any Input here would be good guys

It has been my belief that imprints penn at lower weights than p/r hawks. They never have competion for food and you regulate their food intake - as you are training an imprint long before hard penning, so to let an imprint get very fat would be a mistake.

Todays rations.
Ingredients are one Quail (gutted and skinned(heart, liver and lungs etc left in)) and seven Turkey poults (skinned only)
The prepared quail is smashed up with a hatchet and then cut into bite size chunks.
The skinned poults are simply cut into similarly sized chunks with a pair of sciscors. this is then stirred together with a few drops of added water until the yolk from the poults is evenly distributed.
The result is totaly minging but it seems to go down an absolute treat :vom:
I then portion this out into bags and flatten it out so it freezes quickly and stick them in the chest freezer. They are solid in 10-15 mins.
When fresh food is required I just get one out of the freezer and submerge it in tepid water. they thaw in 5 mins and then you just cut the corner off the bag and squeeze the contents into the food dish. (I find this to be a very wife freindly method) :D
Not perhaps as fancy as OutFlying and his mincer but it works for me :D
p.s. OutFlying has an old fasioned meat mincer for his food prep 8) . Not some Graham Norton type making his food up for him!

The tank is gone! (Yes!!!)
Jessed her up yesterday afternoon. It was a very simple process, She just lay in my lap with her feet in the air while I put them on.
Gave her a small amount of carriage yesterday evening including a walk up the road but she tires very quickly and when tethered she splits her time 50/50 between the bow perch and the nest.
Her weight today was 2lb 4 3/4oz and she is not putting anything on at the moment and I cant see her putting on a great deal more.
This said her feet are still out of proportion with her body and look to me like they are "A couple of sizes too big"

and even higher in her second year?

I would say she's 4-5 oz below the norm for a average sized finnish female. Do not forget she is an imprint and usually they fly lower in the second season unlike p/r which should fly higher.

This is what I thought :D 8)
She is currently fed four times a day from the lure.
The lure is garnished with one skinned chick and one skinned turkey poult. (14oz per day)
This is devoured in one sitting more often than not but once it is gone she wants no more.(She now has no wish to eat if I am not with her)
She is still silent (for now  )
Tim Laycock
24-07-2005, 06:06 PM
2lb 5 5/8oz first thing this morning.
Fed the "usual" (1 chick and turkey poult(skinned) on the lure.
Jumped to the fist from the lure for "free".
Lunch time,Hopped/skipped 8 ft to the lure for the "usual".
Tea time, Hopped/skipped 12 ft to the lure for the same.
She was not quite so keen to get off this time so I let her "Kill" it a few times then she left it and was pleased to be picked up (jumped to fist again for "free")
Speed of response was pleasing, Her keel is as about as sharp as a beach ball 8)

2lb 8oz this morning.
This afternoon she flew 20 ft to the lure, Initially her response was poor but when she had flown for the first chick and eaten it her response time coming for the second was much more pleasing. For the third and final flight (A turkey poult) she was hesitant again but not as much as with the initial flight.
Yesterday I visited my father after the lunchtime training session and after a couple of hours we had a walk around his grounds.
He has some ducks in the grounds of his house and when Ros saw them she went crazy. she literally exploded at them.<vbg>
If I had her more obedient she would of been entered
She is becoming more skittish and is calmed very much by 30 mins carriage prior to training.
I take this to be the "Run up" to penning week and am considering beginning to reduce her rations as her huge appetite is now fading slightly.<g>

Been to the forum birthday bash this weekend with Ros.
She did not like travelling and sleeping in a box but was ok with it by the end of saturday.
Her weight fluctuated a great deal over the weekend but we still managed to make progress and had some good recalls to the lure on the campsite.
She picked this weekend to become vocal(I had to miss part of Ben Long's demo because of this but the upside was exellent response to the lure back at the campsite)
On the sunday she was fed three chicks at 10am so she would have time to put over her crop before starting back for home. Arrived home at 4.30pm and went straight into the back garden for a training session.
This was met with an exellent response-3 recalls to the fist and 1 to the lure. response was very good but not hurried.
Tried this aftermoon in a strange location. Same weight as yesterday but totaly disinterested.
Will try again this evening :D

Some times Ros can still act like a bit of a muppet and I can't tolerate frigging around to no purpose.

You'll never know 100% before actually flying her free , 100 yard recalls should be sufficient - but only you can decide when she's ready. But I think you'll find she be more likely to come back to you no problems and your difficulty may arise in getting away from her, if she is on weight and your rearing was correct.

Shes still not on weight yet.
2 lb 4 3/4 today.
Just got back from trying her.
Poor response, Poor response from trees too.
Showed agression on the lure. Mantled, Made much noise and then left the lure to pose threat.
Did not eat quickly as she was too busy with the above.
This will not do!
And will not continue!!
OutFlying

All the above actions on the lure (aggression and leaving to attack, little interest in food) indicate over weight. Mantling and noise is normal at this stage, if not noisy or mantling she's too high.

Much better but still not satisfactory, Very slow out of tree but hardly no aggression on the lure.
I tried to tail mount her today. it did not go quite to plan!
She was feeding from the lure when we got home and I got the two bottom tabs on the tailmount secured before she had finished but I was too slow with the other two and got "Tagged" for my trouble.

She is doing well.(Progeess was halted bue to helping to look for a lost hawk belonging to a hawking colleague. but its back in his mews now and Im back on the case.

Tail Guard and Tail mount both made by my fair hands.
The tail guard was supplied by Tesco(Deluxe document folder in pink for 78p and self adhesive velcro for £ 1.64)
I Made the Tail mount with a length of brass 5mm bore brass pipe from B&Q(£ 3.47) Two lengths of copper wire are silver soldered to a suitable piece of this and also a 3mm long piece of the 5mm tube.
The two pieces of copper wire are passed through the pvc plectrum then bent over to secure.
The whole thing is then smoothed over with Araldite Rapid to give a smooth finish.
The bell is attached by means of a cable tie passed through the bell and the 3mm wide loop of brass.
If this description is no good I will take some more photos :D
<btw> The tail mount is attached to the deck feathers top and bottom, Not just hung from the top.
Due to the small size of the mount, even with the extra mountings the whole thing does not encroach onto the web of the feathers and her tail still fans perfectly.
(I hate to see the deck feathers of a shortwing looking like they are nailed together)

Flew her tonight and she attempted another "Face bind".
Aside from that it was very encouraging. gave her half her usual ration in the field and took her home.
I then went to meet Mass (A prince among men<btw>) at the motorway services. He had procured me various carcases and when I got home I fed her from one.
When she saw it she **** a brick and bated away but changed her tune when I had split its head open
To say that she was unwilling to relinquish it was an understatement!
I could feel another "Face bind" coming on so I transfered her to the lure instead of the fist. This sat much better with her and because of this we are still buddys  8)

This might be the problem with face aggression, i never fly an young imprint to the fist early days, your asking for problems in food association at eye level and the Gos is flying towards the fist held infront of the face
be careful she will nail you, or try too
mick
Tim Laycock
19-08-2005, 01:24 AM
Mick,
What you say is exactly right.
When flying her to the fist I always stand with my back to her with my arm outstreched and slightly raised.
When I know she is coming I turn my head so that my field of vision is at right angles to my fist.
This works well but the above behaviour occurs when I catch her eye before she has settled down on the glove but after she has eaten the reward. when she comes to the fist for "Free" this behaviour does not manifest itself so as you say it is definatly a food association thing.
Calling to the fist will stop now at any rate as I have the obedience/weight thing at a satisfactory level for now.
Going to try her at a carcase dragged from bushes by an assistant tomorrow evening as she was fed upon one tonight.(She is still footing the left over feathers  )
Hopefully she will get the picture and a full crop to boot 8) :D

BB,
Once she has killed for a couple of months flying to the fist won't be a problem. Recall to the lure always then get her on the fist once finished eating.
As I said earlier these are the worst times ever, but once over it will be worth it. You need to be catching stuff to get her to realise the big picture, you must provide an opportunity for her to catch most days with no more than 4 slips of failure per day.

Since I discovered that "Ros" is a female it has become my intention to breed my own imprint reared Goshawks from her.
I have never really been very big on imprints(With the exception of spar's) for me this is purely an experiment.
The sport I achieve with "Ros" will have to be really top level stuff to sway me from this course.
I do not think my marriage will afford another imprint Gos (To say relations are strained is the understatement of the decade!)

Fair play Tim, I was living on my own when I imprinted the Gos and the Spar, and now I'm living with the other half I don't think she would be too amused by the constant noise, and she is more understanding than most.
I will continue to imprint Spars like you but as far as Gosses go it's P/R for me.
These early months when you need to be killing daily are so important, but it is bloody hard work and I was out 7 days a week whether I wanted to or not, because the bird had to be flown to keep it happy, and that sometimes takes the fun factor out of it, in my opinion anyway.
Best of luck, hope it works out well.

Flew her tonight at 2lb 3 3/4 oz, Same weight as last night but with a difference.
Yesterday evening she displayed all the signs of Yarak but was not acctualy interested in chasing anything.
By measure of this, Yesterday evening she was fed plenty of good casting with her meat(6 ounces of pheasant breast) and this morning (After casting)instead of a yolked chick on the lure she was allowed to plume a whole pigeon wing instead.(The cast was good but not as good as tomorrow mornings will be)
This evening she was in a much fuller Yarak than yesterday and took her first proper slip.
A Blackbird was the quarry as it was put up by my almost standing on it. As I was not holding her jesses she tore off after it but it beat her to cover and was reluctant to come out<g>(She swung up and returned to the glove for free without landing)
10 mins later we came across two Leverets playing in the middle of a field.
She would of taken one with ease and it would of been a perfect slip, Had she made a meal of it! What she did infact was look at them dumbfounded and turn her head upsidedown

Shes going well.
Had another slip last night(Blue Jay)but she was beaten by the abundance of cover
After a frustrated "head bind" upon missing the quarry(Ouch) she was given one chick on the lure as reward for a prompt recall.
While she was eating this the heavens opened so we sheltered under a railway viaduct. The weather showed no signs of abating so we did some 2 doc's worth of high jumps.
I then put a chick on the lure, put her on the floor under the viaduct and ran out into the rain, stopping after about 200 yards.
I produced the lure and she set off instantly, At this point I set off running with it at full pelt down the field, Every time I looked around she was gaining but really having to pump her wings all the way.
She hit the lure very hard(She and the lure turned three somersaults)
She was re-jessed and taken up from the lure. Then she was allowed to plume a pigeon wing on her bow when we returned home(Soaked)

Saturday 27th Due to a lack of game we did some work with the rabbit lure, A very lackluster performance was shown, She got the Idea in the end but was painfully slow.
(Must admit to feeling a tad embarrased as I was in company)
Yesterday, Had the afternoon at Broughton Hall with Yorkshire Hawker and my sister. It had the makings of a good outing but was marred slightly by the fact that I fell in a ditch full of cold water wich went above my ankles and I only had my brogues on
While working a banking a hen pheasant was flushed and she took off after it.
A stern chase ensued but the pheasant made it to cover easily, She crashed in after it but was extricated from the cover empty handed.
I consoled myself with the fact that at least she didnt kill it on the "Put in"
After this she was silent all afternoon and it was unfortunate that no suitable slips could be found for her.
(We did see a wild tiercel Gos so the day was not a complete downer)
By evening she had returned to previous form ie- Screaming her tits off with a full crop
Still have my reservations about this Imprint Goshawk lark!
Im sure it will come right in the end but it is a right ball ache and definatly not to be entered into lightly. Thats for sure.

Pete Smith
02-09-2005, 11:18 AM
Blackbird,
Ref your last post and describing imprinting as a "ball ache". You get what you deserve.
I know numerous falconers that have successfully imprinted Gos's with consistent good manners and performance.
From your previous posts, and talking to you briefly at the "bash" you don't appear to have a clear plan, or exact expectations of what you expect from your bird.
The bird you brought to the bash should have been killing for weeks at that stage, poor, slow performance....bad manners is "your" problem, not the birds, or problems with current imprinting techniques.
You wouldn't build a house etc without plans...goals, the mind boggles!
Tim Laycock
02-09-2005, 12:04 PM
Pete Smith,
The bird you saw at the bash was not hard penned and is not and was never intended to be a recipie imprint (If you had been on this thread from the start you would be well aware of the fact)
<BTW>The manners are clearing up now as the Gos is killing with avengence
Keep your opinions to yourself, I am very happy with whats achieved by me and mine
I thought you were a nice bloke when we met evidently by your manner today I had you totaly wrong.
I now fell a little silly for singing your praises and plugging your video but I shall stop as of now.
The mind boggles at you Pete
If you disagree with my statement that imprinting goshawks is a ball ache and not to be entered into lightly then you are a bigger fool than I thought Mr Smith.

You can fly the imprint before hard penning without damage occuring, I flew my male at 7 weeks old. Flying to the lure at 5-6 weeks - hunting at 7 weeks.
Just personnal preference really. A gos physically matures a long time before a harris.

I dont like hunting prior to hard-penning because It means reducing weight and this brings the risk of hunger traces on feathers.

Kev,
With an imprint you wouldn't need to drop the weight. You maintain its weight during the imprinting process and don't let it get fat, then your use appetite to gauge how much to feed. Don't forget you've been teaching it to return to the lure from a very early age and in the wild would be flying and pursueing quarry at the same age as the imprint.
He chased the first thing he saw without any artificial means used during rearing. Here's a picture at 9 weeks, been flying for 2 weeks by then - notice the lack of frets marks and feather perfect.
Its just down the Austringer when he wants to fly his hawk. Also males mature faster than females.

Nice going Tim, some real variety there. Keep up the good work,
"Hardly likley to set the Goshawking world on fire"
Reckon its good going..and honest:finga: ..its all about the quality of the flights with a Gos..something thats often lost,as people seem to think if a Gos chases it,its gotta be dead...another thing, with a brown bird, its all about "making"your bird for the 2nd season and beyond...my male has "only" had 9 rabbits,a jackdaw and two hen pheasants(2nd yesterday)..but hes pinging fit and obediant, and will fly over any dog..strong and proud..hes "made"..roll on next season & real feathers:lol: (and no more divvy brown birds,..god i HATE training):!:
p.s.
ask h/man 69,hes bourn the brunt of my brown bird ravings this season...cheers Gaz:supz:
p.p.s

Blaze, goshawks are nothing like Harris Hawks when it comes to picking up from kills!
Dont let the mantling fool you:wink:
Even with a full mantling imprint as soon as you ask they will step from a kill for the smallest reward, and (with imprints) return to normal posture almost instantly.
Of course a P/R goshawk should not mantle at all and if it does it is a poorly made bird.
(Hopefully you will see on wednesday:wink:)

Straws can cost between £50 and £100 or an arangement dividing the brood can be arrived at.
Most of the time you see a sample under the scope if you pick it up.

BB,
I hate to even ask but I'm dumbfounded as to know how much that is American, any idea?
If a person were to make "arangements" , how would you go about it? Divide chicks after hatch, divide eggs as they are laid? Just curious , as I may find myself in that position with two donors this year and would like to know what is "fair" in the eyes of those that have already done it.

Tim Laycock

$87-$175 at the current exchange rate (We are not to the cent <g>)
Chicks would be divided as soon as they can be accurately sexed
Either a 50/50 split or the first female of a brood are the accepted norms

It was a perfectly logical assumption m8, there are enough Goshawks being bred as it is and churning em out aint my bag though.

I have put a clear egg back with her now, four eggs is more than enough for any flying bird to produce in the off season!

Blackbird
Last night I read your thread about Ros the Gos from start to finish and it was fantastic, I could hardly wait to reach the end to find out what had happened. Is she still screaming and is she the bird with eggs (seems a bit young to me to be laying) or do you now have another. I am planning my first Gos for this summer and an imprint is definately not for me (my wife would leave) so how hard did you find this and may a p/r bird be a better option. What do you think?
Best wishes.

John,
She is the same bird from the start to the current time in the thread.
This time last year she was in an egg herself infact possibly not even layed yet ,I cant be sure without getting my book out.
She no longer screams in the field and is quite bearable at home also but you are right in your decision to get a parent reared bird, it will make for a much smoother ride

Hawkmaster
14-04-2006, 02:14 PM
Not bad thanks mate, got the stuff and popped it in but the thingy for inseminating was a bit poo, so I made it better this morning and gave her the rest. Easy, but a bit of an anti-climax at £60 a pop.
The semen comes from a male that flew at 1 12.5 to 1lb 13oz.
So now we just have to wait and see?

As a rough guess I would say early august Jim.(all flight feathers)
I will pull her properly and enseam her as soon as she is ready but I cant make up my mind wether to bash some corvids until its time or do some of my "bridge jumping"
Possibly a bit of both, I suppose she needs to be killing as soon as she is ready really, I dont want her to go backwards attitude wise
Tim Laycock
21-06-2006, 05:52 PM
Went out to feed her this afternoon, went into the pen to pick her up for weighing and when she flew over two brown tail feathers and a brown wing covert fell out.
Sat her on the scales (2lb 15 1/8 ) and when she stepped back onto the glove her old leg scales dropped out from under her jesses (The irony was not lost  )
She has finaly taken to bathing daily so her fear of water is hopefully a thing of the past now  (brown imprints   )
