I was wondering: How many times do abatement falconers fly their birds during a shift?

At a small airport beetween 7 and 10 times a day and usually two birds each time. However if we get a problem with say seagulls it can be more but then again if it rains allot less.

was wondering when actually doing this ,do you cast hawk/bird out of window of 4 x 4 or car or on an Airport do you actually walk around air field, what happens if hawk gets too near , silly question i think , i service some welfare units near local airport, but never seen anyone with hawk & i go there frequently, would that be classed as car hawking ?? seen a guy @ American airport with a HH on u tube i think doing this type of work, don't you get worried about your bird ? or is that another silly question any way i shut up!! regards john

I will fly a bird as often as needed. I've 'flown' 20 times in one day.

Because of the nature of how I fly, (mostly) pursuit followed by loiter/waiting on each individual bird can be 'flown' 5 times maybe more.

It also depends on how you define flight. I have an imprint barbary that is a pursuit hawk (mostly). In one outing, he may leave the glove to chase pests 5 or more times, chasing up to 1/2 mile. We may do this five times in one day. Is that 5 flights or 25 flights from the same bird.

I have another bird I can put up waiting on, so far longest has been 45 minutes (first year bird) but he may only fly 1 to 3 times in a day as the work to take a pitch and maintain position in 10+mph winds takes some energy.

Smaller, roosting/flocking birds around airports but not in the flight path, perhaps a HH is what gets the job done. Gulls, geese and ducks in the grass around the runway, falcons might be better as a flight clears the airspace for awhile.

Depends on the problem and be assured, after falconry based abatement starts techniques will have to change as the pests adapt.
