Hope you have more than one hawking ground, or the quarry will vanish the moment they hear the bell by the end of week 2!!
Going for walks any where will help to get him used to things that you may meet when he's flying free. This is a very basic question your asking here, have you got any one in your area who can give you help and advice and may be take you out hunting, or come out with you????
I hope this doesn't sound rude, only trying to help,.....but have you read any books or had any experience??

:

This is not the sort of question you should need to ask just 7 weeks before a live bird arrives with you, needing a fair amount of skill, knowledge and experience to ensure its training and welfare are properly taken care of.

Sorry if I have misunderstood but I agree with Coedhirion, you should try and contact someone nearby for some days out and advise.

Hello MTR46.

Have you been on a course or got some advise since your last postings regarding PR hawks and the best type of food?

Please say you have :)

This already looks like you are going to get more negative than positive responses due to the basic nature of your question. Perhaps if you were to give more details of any experience you have it may help, but I feel if you have to ask these questions at this stage, you are not ready to take on a bird. Believe me when i say we do wish to help and advise and not put you down but we would be more concerned for the welfare of the BIRD

SORRY NOT TO HAVE GIVEN MORE DETAIL I HAVE BEEN ON A COURSE AT THIRSK FALCONRY CENTRE READ THE BOOKS READ MILLIONS OF PAGES ON THE NET . BUT SINCE FINDING THIS FORUM SO MANY FALCONERS DISAGREE WITH EACH OTHER ITS CONFUSING. FOOD SUPLY SOURCED MEWS BUILT ALL THE EQUIPMENT BOUGHT THE BIRD WILL HAVE THE BEST CARE POSSIBLE BUT I WAS TOLD ON MY COURSE TO MAN AND FEED OFF THE FIST ASAP BUT MOST OF YOU DISAGREE WITH THIS JUST WONDERED IF NOT FEEDING OFF THE FIST INITIALLY TO TRY AND AVOID IMPRINTING AND JUST TRY TO GAIN TRUST BY WALKING WITH HIM. I JUST WANT TO TRY AND DO THE BEST FOR MY HARRIS.

God!...

This is so civilized, I love it!!!, you should see what latinamerican people ask:
- Hey I have a falcon ..or a hawk I dont know what kind... can anyone tell me what to feed her with?...
- Someone gave me a big eagle I try to put her on my arm but she grab me and injured me badly, a friend told me about leather gloves...do you know where can I buy those?.
- I would like to own a raptor... How can I trap a falcon?..
- And so on.....

So, well done MTR46, this is so civilized!!!

You sould try and find some one local with a bit of knowledge. There are times when a second pair of hands is required for casting, equipping etc. Plus if you want to get the bird entered quickly when it's flying free (to keep its interest and turn it into a goodun), help watching the bird and the quarry and finding quarry too. Wish you luck, Keep asking questions too!!
There are different ideas and 2 methods of training, 1 is quite new and you dont feed on the glove. Go with the method you have been shown which is probably the well tried and tested and well written about method!!

With regard to MT46's question, I suggest you read Phillip Glasier's "Falconry and Hawking" from cover to cover at least twice before you ever consider getting a bird. You won't go far wrong.

I hope you didnt take my post the wrong way Adrian. You are right, there are a lot of clueless posters and it is a shame that they misinform people.

Not at all mate, but i agree that some posters should maybe just sit back and watch a thread rather than jumping in with both feet!

So, any of the old cronies still in the NEFC? Alec, Barry,Daz chad ??????
Im gonna come along to a meeting later in the year and wind em all up

The last time I saw Alec was about 12 years ago. He was acting as Bob Dalton's sales agent at the club after BD had taken his bat and ball home
Barry L, My father has now retired from falconry following a quadruple bypass.
Barry S, Is now with the Lancashire Falconry Club I believe.
Darren is now an active member of the BFC Yorkshire regional group.
I can remember when there was only one falconry club in the north of england. All came from far and wide and it was very good :prayer:

Politics! Splinter groups! What ever happened to the NEFC?

But its coming back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D

Hey MTR46,

I can see where you are coming from, your first hawk, you have read all the books, done the course....and you just cant stop thinking about whats best/whats right/what will give the best results etc etc And the closer you get to picking up the hawk the bigger the question marks get! :)

I think for your first hawk I would follow the advice of the guy on your course. This is the traditional method of manning a hawk and has been used for centuaries. Once you have had the experience in training one hawk, you can then reflect on what you think went well, and what you would change.

Every single person on this forum was in your position once, I am sure you will do brilliantly!
