Sorry, I cant type in Chinese. Please move this topic if it does not belong here.

I am going to NanChang, JiangXi province over the summer, I was wondering if there are any falconers or falconry related stuff over there that I could check out.

Hey Louis,

Mr. Tong, Menxiu has answered to your call. He will visit Nanchang periodically in the next 3 month. He might reside there, too. Anyway, keep in touch with him. He also mentioned that there is nothing going on except a few hawk dealers. (you know, summer is pretty dead for falconers world wide).

Thanks Mr. Tongmenxiu. I have sent you a pm with my email, feel free to email me when you arrive there. I will be arriving around 7/01/09. I want to find some traditional equipment such as hoods etc to bring back, a fellow Canadian has asked me for this favour. Also, accipiterfreak, I am not a foreigner, I am chinese, I just can't type chinese and hardly read, I am an immigrant who forgot the words, I can speak fluently but not read or write.

Yeah I know that summer isn't hunting season so falconry isn't active, I've heard that Chinese falconers release their birds in spring and don't keep them over the summer as a tradition.

(Louis, I am just asking my Chinese fellow falconers if they need translation.)

hey Louis, nice to know that you are a Chinese falconer. Tong doesn’t have to worry about speaking English (I know he speaks good English, he is just lazy). There are two extraordinary traditional Chinese hood makers here in this forum, “peregrine” and “China hood”. You can contact them for the hoods.

Alan G

I have arrived yesterday. And just to update, my grandfather and I have asked around in the local bird and fish markets to summerize our results, falconry is not practiced in Nanchang. And eagles/hawks (not sure which species they were talking about because they used the word "Lao Ying" which I'm not sure whether refers to eagle or hawk.) are only kept in zoo-like facilities by people with special licenses because they are one of the most protected species. Not sure about falcons because i don't know the specific words for falcon or anyother species.

I have a shrike hunting video clip made in 2 yrs ago. I don't know if you can play video clip from Chinese video sharing website? Hunting with shrikes is a Beijing specialty, so far as I understand; you can't find people in other Chinese providences practice this art, and they don’t have this tradition, too. Shrike hunting is only practiced in late winter.
Mr. Alan Gate understand this practice pretty well, you can try to contact him. He is Alan G on this forum.

You're getting the "tourist" line there, friend.
You need to dig deeper and tell them you're a falconer, yourself. Keep at it and somebody will come out of the woodwork. There are falconers all over China - they just don't announce it to random Canadians travelling through.
Are you going to Beijing or Shanghai, at all?

I couldn't see anything neither, but Xiaodong will make another clip this coming winter with better camera. The shrike was released in the middle of the clip when the sparrows scatered (we are should have seen a line fly by :) )........
anyway, Xiaodong did his best, hopefully, he will show a better one next time.

FOUND! I found a falconer in Nanchang. Chinese falconry is a lot different from what I've heard from the internet. :-| Apparently the government has severe punishments for those who practice falconry without a license (I heard it was almost impossible for them to issue you one in mainland China). I posted a blog (http://gacs.blog.com/) about my "adventures" in search of falconry in China. My blog sucks, its just a free one I quickly registered for so please don't be too judgmental.

Just read your blog again. Thanks for sharing some info. I know it's not that long and clear but I can get a lot of info about falconry in China ;)
Would like to know the contact person. Perhaps, when I visit China I could call him and share more about Chinese falconry with him. Thanks.

song-zi is a male Japanese sparrowhawk, not a merlin

Leiferouis
02-09-2009, 04:35 AM
Probably thought I was describing a sparrowhawk then. Common error. But from what I read from Mr. Alan Gate's gallery/blog, merlins are "favoured as street hawks and flown after sparrows" and that kestrels are favoured above merlins, which makes me assume that the merlins Mr. Gates were referring to were quite commonly used in China. Based on that, I figured that when I described "very small, specialize in catching birds, flutters really fast" he would think "merlin". Either way, its my fault for being stupid and not keeping in mind the common confusion between sparrowhawk and merlin when I was talking with him. I'll mention the mistake on the blog later. Thanks for pointing it out. I should have known better.

This reminds me, before anyone accuses me of spreading false information about Falconry in China. My blog may not be entirely accurate, I am merely summarizing what I remember from our discussions, which is basically that man telling me what he remembers about his falconry experiences. I might have interpreted and/or translated some of the things he said to me the wrong way. Please keep in mind of this when you're reading my blog, I just wanted to share what I have been told. However, I can assure you that the information on my blog is completely from our discussions, the parts I couldn't remember, I did not enter in.
