i always use surgical tape over the ring it stops the ring coming off and you have always got a nice clean readable ring when moving the youngsters on

i use surgical tape (paper type breathable) you can buy it from most supermarkets or pharmacy's)
ring the birds and cut a strip of the tape and wrap it around the ring tuck the ends down inside the ring to close the diameter of the ring (never had a youngster slip the ring by doing it this way) you also get a clean ring when you pull the youngsters.

I carefully put tape around the rings also , but may main reason for this is to stop any twigs going through the ring and trapping the youngster i"v had it happen a few times but luckily i spotted the problem in time before any real harm was done.

My peregrines mate, incubate, hatch, and rear naturally so I only go in once to ring at 8 or 9 days old.
I put the female ring on first, then the smaller male ring on the same leg with tape. Which ever ring is not needed can be cut off later.
For imprints I used to put a male ring on one leg and the female ring on the other leg , and tape on each ring. If a ring falls off an imprint it is easy to put it back on the same day.
